17-year-old charged with rape of LSU student

 February 25, 2023

A teenager charged with raping an LSU student who was later run over and killed will be tried as an adult.

Desmond Carter, 17, was indicted on first-degree rape charges in East Baton Rouge on Wednesday that could lead to being sentenced to life in prison.

The charges

Carter was one of four men charged in the alleged rape of Madi Brooks on Jan. 15.

Kavion Washington, 18, was charged with third-degree rape in the case.

Two other men, Casen Carver (18) and Everett Lee (28) were charged with being accessories  to the crime.

Madi later died after being struck by a ride-sharing vehicle at about 3 a.m. in the morning.

The case

"In a conversation shortly before his surrender, Washington told WBRZ’s Chris Nakamoto that he had sex with Brooks before she died. Washington said it was consensual," WBRZ-TV reported.

"Washington said he, the other suspects and Brooks left Reggie’s — a bar in Tigerland — early Sunday, Jan. 15, after a night of heavy drinking. He said he and another teen had sex with Brooks in the backseat of a vehicle," it added.

Carver and Lee were in the front seat, according to arrest records.

"Washington said Brooks later asked to go home," the report stated. "They brought her back to where she told them she wanted to be dropped off, near the Pelican Lakes subdivision off of Burbank Drive."

More cases

Washington was also recently accused of two other sex crimes similar to the one involving Brooks.

"One allegedly occurred in Livingston Parish in 2020, when he was 16 and the victim was 12, and the more recent one reportedly took place in the same area of East Baton Rouge in October 2022 after the victim and her alleged attackers met outside Reggie's," Fox News reported.

"The October victim, whose age was not identified in court records, was too drunk to drive, so Jones and Washington allegedly drove her from the bar to Jones' home, where both men allegedly sexually assaulted her and force-fed her alcohol when she asked for water," it added.

The tragedy now moves forward as the state moves toward a court date to begin the legal proceedings against the accused.
