AZ Resident Charged with Terrorism for Shooting at Democratic Party Office

 November 6, 2024

An Arizona man has been indicted on terrorism and multiple other charges after targeting a Democratic Party campaign office.

Jeffrey Kelly, 60, faces serious legal repercussions for his alleged role in the shootings at a Democratic National Committee office in Tempe, Arizona, as the Washington Examiner reports.

The indictment includes one count of terrorism among other charges.

This follows Kelly's involvement in attacks that occurred on three different nights in late 2023.

Escalation of Violent Incidents

The first incident happened on Sept. 16, with subsequent attacks on September 23 and October 6. Each attack took place overnight, specifically between midnight and 1 a.m.

Initially, Kelly reportedly used a CO2-powered gun for the first shooting.

For the later incidents, he escalated to using firearms, which resulted in more extensive damage to the campaign office.

Destruction at the DNC Office

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, more than twenty shots were fired across the three events. This onslaught left the office's windows, front doors, and walls severely damaged.

"Kelly first used a CO2-powered gun, then escalated to firearms for the second and third shootings. Over the course of the three shootings, Kelly fired more than twenty times, causing damage to the building’s windows, front doors, and walls," stated the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

Authorities Uncover Extensive Arsenal

A search of Kelly’s residence led to the discovery of an alarming amount of weaponry and ammunition.

Investigators found over 120 guns and more than 250,000 rounds of ammunition.

This discovery has raised concerns that Kelly may have been preparing for a mass casualty event, according to authorities.

Suspicious Activities Linked to Kelly

In addition to the shootings, Kelly is also suspected of being involved in other anti-Democratic activities. Authorities connected him to signs placed in Ahwatukee, Arizona, which bore hostile messages against the Democratic Party.

These signs were not only critical of the Democrats but also dangerous, being lined with razor blades and attached bags of white powder. The powder bags were labeled with phrases like “DEMS LIE” and “DEMS KILL JEWS.”

Community and Legal Reactions

The signs were promptly taken down by authorities once discovered. The nature of these messages and the method of their placement have only added to the gravity of the charges Kelly faces.

"It’s the state’s belief that Mr. Kelly poses the most extreme danger within a democracy and within our community. Trying to disrupt political activity, aiming violence at a political party is completely, completely out of bounds," expressed the prosecutor during a court hearing.

Legal Proceedings and Public Safety Concerns

The series of events has not only led to significant property damage but also to a heightened state of alert among political offices in the region.

As the case progresses, the community and authorities remain vigilant, aiming to prevent any further acts of violence and protect democratic processes.
