On Thursday afternoon, two 18-year-old men were shot in Chicago's South Loop, resulting in one fatality. The shooting occurred just steps away from a Central (1st) District police station and minutes after a nearby school was dismissed, according to CBS.

Shooting Details

The victims were in a car on the 2000 block of South State Street, near Cullerton Street, around 3:30 P.M. when a stolen Kia approached them.

An occupant of the Kia fired several rounds at the victims. One young man was struck in the hand and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

The other was hit in the body and taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead.

The Kia was later found unoccupied near the Red Line near Cermak Road and State Street.

Witnesses reported that several people had jumped out of the crashed vehicle and left it running.

Police confirmed that the white Kia had been stolen, though it remains unclear if it was taken in a carjacking. The suspects did not leave any weapons behind.

Eyewitness Accounts

At the time of the shooting, State Street was bustling with pedestrians, including students who had just been released from school.

Lena Phillips, a local resident, reported hearing four or five gunshots and seeing a man getting up off the ground.

Initially believing the man was injured, however, she later discovered that he had dropped to the ground to stay safe and evade gunfire.

"Obviously, he was dropping to the ground for cover – and I saw him get up and walk away," Phillips said.

Police tape was later set up around the crime scene, and Phillips was informed that someone had been killed.

No one was in custody as of late Thursday, and police have not released any images or descriptions of the shooters who fled the scene.

Ongoing Investigation

It remains unclear who the victims were or if they were the intended targets. Area Three detectives are currently investigating the shooting.

The incident has left the community in disbelief, and a family is now grieving the loss of a loved one.

The incident occurred close to a police station and a school, raising concerns about safety in the area.
