Walz Exaggerated China Trips, Campaign Now Clarifies

 October 2, 2024

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kamala Harris' running mate, is facing backlash after admitting he exaggerated the number of trips he took to China. Acknowledging the discrepancy, his campaign spokesperson stated the count is “closer to 15 times” rather than the “dozens” Walz initially claimed.

According to Fox News, Walz's admission came after scrutiny from GOP critics and media inquiries, raising further questions about potential discrepancies in his background, including his military service and personal life.

Walz initially claimed he had traveled to China “dozens of times” during a 2016 congressional hearing, and he reiterated a similar statement in an agriculture-focused publication that same year. Minnesota Public Radio verified approximately 12 of these trips, which directly contradicted his "dozens" statement, prompting a clarification.

Walz's Ties to China Under Scrutiny

Walz’s connection to China dates back to 1989 when he visited the country during the Tiananmen Square uprising as part of Harvard's WorldTeach program. He and his wife, Gwen, later ran an educational travel company that led trips to China from 1993 to the early 2000s, before Walz entered Congress.

The company, Educational Travel Adventures, Inc., was dissolved after Walz's congressional win in 2006. His campaign website has touted his association with Macau Polytechnic University, an institution linked with the Chinese Communist Party.

The increased scrutiny from GOP critics came after House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer sent a letter to the FBI, querying Walz’s involvement with entities or officials from the Chinese Communist Party.

Public Statements Under Examination

Walz’s public statements have come under close examination in recent days. During a 2016 congressional hearing, Walz stated, "I have been to China dozens of times." He made a similar claim to an agriculture-focused publication, saying, "I've been there about 30 times."

In a 2006 debate with GOP Rep. Gil Gutknecht, Walz argued for "real solutions" in education and military, highlighting his efforts to foster cultural exchanges with China. However, recent findings suggest that his record may not align with these statements.

Beyond his China trips, critics have accused Walz of other embellishments. Notably, he described himself as a "retired command sergeant major" in the Army National Guard, although he did not hold that rank upon retirement. Additionally, allegations have surfaced regarding his supposedly inaccurate claims of combat experience in the Middle East.

Personal Life Accusations and Response

Walz and his wife have been accused of making dubious assertions about their use of IVF. Although Fox News Digital attempted to reach out to the Harris-Walz campaign for comments and clarifications, there was no response before publication.

A former national guard veteran remarked on the ongoing controversy, commenting, "He's a habitual liar. He lies about everything. He lies about stuff that doesn't make sense."

This revelation and the resulting scrutiny have brought to light multiple facets of Walz’s past. His involvement with China, his military background, and his personal claims are now under the microscope, challenging the authenticity of his public persona.

The Fallout from the Admissions

The timing of this controversy is significant, as Walz is on the ticket as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in the upcoming election. While his campaign attempts to manage the fallout, the attention on his past remarks and professional history adds a complex layer to their campaign narrative.

Campaign clarity is now paramount as Walz's credibility is questioned. These recent developments pose a challenge to his political prospects, with potential long-term implications for his future in public office.

For now, the Harris-Walz campaign continues to navigate these turbulent waters, hoping to redirect focus to their policy proposals and away from the mounting questions about Walz's past.

Given the political climate and the stakes of the upcoming election, any further revelations could prove critical, either solidifying GOP critiques or necessitating further adjustments from the Harris-Walz campaign team.
