Schumer Encourages Biden to Rethink 2024 Campaign, Sources Say

 July 18, 2024

President Joe Biden's support from key Democratic leaders is reportedly weakening, with several influential figures now suggesting he should withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, though the commander in chief appears determined to continue his campaign and has reaffirmed his commitment to his political agenda.

Biden's support from elected Democratic party leaders is on the decline, however, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer having reportedly urged the president to give serious thought to exiting the race, as ABC News reports.

Schumer Urges Biden to Consider Withdrawal

According to a source close to both Schumer and Biden, Schumer advised Biden to consider withdrawing from the 2024 contest.

Schumer’s spokesperson did not comment on the specifics of the meeting but confirmed that Schumer conveyed his caucus’s views to Biden. This meeting occurred on the same day as an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries also suggested to Biden that he should withdraw from the 2024 race during a private conversation. Jeffries' spokesperson indicated that Jeffries’ letter to House Democrats, dated July 12, summarized insights and perspectives without stating whether Biden should drop out.

Statements from Schumer and Jeffries

Schumer’s office released a statement saying, "I sat with President Biden this afternoon in Delaware; we had a good meeting."

The spokesperson further elaborated, "Leader Schumer conveyed the views of his caucus." Another statement from the spokesperson added, "Unless ABC's source is Chuck Schumer or President Joe Biden the reporting is idle speculation. Leader Schumer conveyed the views of his caucus directly to President Biden on Saturday."

Jeffries, in his letter dated July 12, wrote, "In my conversation with President Biden, I directly expressed the full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives and conclusions about the path forward that the Caucus has shared in our recent time together." Jeffries' spokesperson remarked, "The letter sent by Leader Hakeem Jeffries to his House Democratic colleagues speaks for itself. It was a private conversation that will remain private."

Biden’s Determination to Continue

Despite these suggestions, the White House has made it clear that President Biden intends to continue his campaign. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates affirmed Biden’s intention to run in 2024 and work on his 100 days agenda.

Bates stated, "The President told both leaders he is the nominee of the party, he plans to win, and looks forward to working with both of them to pass his 100 days agenda to help working families."

Biden still retains support from influential figures within the party, such as the Congressional Black Caucus, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. These endorsements highlight a division within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s candidacy.

Divisions Within the Democratic Party

The growing concerns among Democratic leaders about Biden’s ability to lead the party to victory in 2024 are becoming more evident. An unnamed source close to the situation commented, "Biden is going to see the whole house of cards come down soon." This reflects the anxiety and urgency among some party members to rethink their strategy for the upcoming election.

While Schumer and Jeffries have expressed their concerns privately, the public statements remain measured and diplomatic. The emphasis on private conversations and letters indicates a cautious approach to managing internal party dynamics.

Public and Private Reactions

Schumer’s and Jeffries’ meetings with Biden and their subsequent communications suggest a concerted effort to address these concerns discreetly. The lack of explicit public statements urging Biden to step aside demonstrates the sensitivity of the issue.

Meanwhile, the attempted assassination of former President Trump on the same day as Schumer’s meeting with Biden adds a layer of complexity to the political landscape. This incident, although unrelated to the discussions about Biden’s candidacy, underscores the volatile and high-stakes nature of contemporary American politics.

Conclusion

In conclusion, President Joe Biden faces growing pressure from within his party to reconsider his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

Key Democratic leaders like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries have privately urged Biden to step aside, reflecting concerns about his ability to lead the party to victory.

Despite this, Biden remains resolute in his decision to run and continues to have significant support from influential party members. The situation highlights the internal divisions within the Democratic Party as it navigates its strategy for the upcoming election.
