California Democrats Orchestrate Biden Exit, Endorse Harris to Face Trump

 July 23, 2024

President Joe Biden's decision to forgo his reelection campaign has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, resulting from substantial coercion by prominent California Democrats and other influential figures who questioned his viability in a rematch against Donald Trump.

Vice President Kamala Harris has swiftly garnered considerable endorsements to take Biden's place at the top of the Democratic ticket, thanks in large part to the so-called "California Mafia" led by Nancy Pelosi, as the Washington Examiner reports.

Biden announced on Sunday his intent to serve as a one-term president. Following a strained debate performance, a chorus of Democratic voices, particularly from California, began urging him to step aside.

House Democrats, wary of a potential electoral disaster with Biden as their nominee, found solid leadership in Pelosi.

Pelosi and Schiff Lead the Charge

Pelosi, a no-nonsense figure revered within her party, played a pivotal role in championing the case for Biden's withdrawal. Alongside Rep. Adam Schiff, she was among the first to publicly endorse Harris. By midday Monday, the endorsements had been rolled out.

“That’s why some of us are going to Pelosi. She’s a tough cookie. She’ll tell you like it is,” one House Democrat remarked, highlighting Pelosi's influential capacity as a “power-broker.” An insider noted, “We’ve covered Pelosi for a long time now and can tell you her fingerprints are all over the knife.”

The coalition pushing for Biden’s exit also included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray, Rep. Jim Clyburn, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. They believed in giving Biden an ultimatum, with a Democrat revealing, “She gave them three weeks of the easy way. It was about to be the hard way.”

Concerns Over Biden's Performance

Fears among Democrats about Biden’s ability to win the next election were aggravated after his poor debate performance. Rep. Zoe Lofgren and other lawmakers publicly called for Biden to step down, leading to his announcement as he declared, “While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus entirely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”

Prominent Hollywood figures also joined the chorus. George Clooney expressed admiration for Biden, saying, “I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can.”

Clooney continued, reflecting on Biden's recent decline, “It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate. With Biden on the ticket, we are not going to win in November.”

Hollywood and Tech Titans Weigh In

Actress Ashley Judd stressed her belief in the importance of strong leadership for the protection of freedoms, stating, “The defense of our cherished rights and freedoms, the moral imperative that we do better by more people, and our bodies, cannot be left to voters who see and are frightened of the consequences of President Biden’s obvious limitations, or who are now not going to vote. We take the risk of an off night and minimize the warning signs at our gravest peril.”

Director Rob Reiner echoed these sentiments, bluntly saying, “It’s time to stop f***ing around. If the Convicted Felon wins, we lose our Democracy. Joe Biden has effectively served US with honor, decency, and dignity. It’s time for Joe Biden to step down.”

Support for Biden also declined in the tech sector, with Silicon Valley leaders such as Elon Musk, Ben Horowitz, and Marc Andreessen, pivoting their support to Trump. In a dramatic twist, Mark Zuckerberg lauded Trump's resilience following an assassination attempt, calling it “one of the most bad*** things” he had ever seen.

Biden's Announcement and Harris' Rise

Following Biden’s announcement, Silicon Valley wasted no time rallying financial support for Harris. California delegates began consolidating their endorsements for the Vice President, with State Democratic Party Chairman Rusty Hicks declaring, “Now it is time for Democrats to unite around our common callingdefeating Donald Trump, retaking the House of Representatives and preserving our democracy. I am asking delegates from our great state of California and home to our Vice President, Kamala Harris, to officially endorse her nominati -- on for President of the United States at the convention in Chicago.”

The internal dissent over Biden’s candidacy underscored a significant shift in the Democratic Party’s strategy with influential leaders aligning their focus on a stronger contender against Trump.

Biden’s acknowledgment of his limitations and commitment to fulfill his presidential duties has been viewed as an honorable stepping down moment, signaling a phase of unification within the party.

Vice President Kamala Harris' elevation opens a new chapter as she battles to retain Democratic control in a contentious political landscape, shaped heavily by internal pressures and external endorsements.

As the Democratic Party converges around Harris, the true test will lie in rallying voter support to challenge Trump’s growing momentum. The narrative of Biden’s exit and Harris’s rise illustrates a profound moment of political maneuvering influenced by a blend of political strategy, celebrity advocacy, and technological power plays.
