Harris Criticized for Past Claims About Biden's Health Amid Leadership Shift

 July 24, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris is facing criticism for her previous reassurances about President Joe Biden's health.

Harris, now leading the Democratic race after President Biden's campaign exit, is under growing fire for repeatedly dismissing concerns about Biden's physical and cognitive status, something critics suggest was dishonest and akin to a coverup, as Fox News reports.

The vice president consistently dismissed concerns about Biden's health in numerous public statements over the past year. In February, during an appearance on Good Morning America, Harris declared, "We have a very bold and vibrant president in Joe Biden."

Harris Defended Biden's Health Publicly

Throughout the year, Harris maintained a firm stance on Biden’s health. In February, she insisted, "Our president is in good shape, in good health, and is ready to lead in our second term."

Harris continued to defend Biden in November 2023, emphasizing the importance of focusing on issues rather than his cognitive abilities.

"It is important we not be seduced into one of the only arguments that that side of the aisle has right now on [Biden's cognitive decline] in a way that is intended to distract!" Harris stated during a public appearance in November 2023.

Emphasizing Biden's Authority and Experience

In the same month, Harris further praised Biden's authority and experience, stating, "Age is more than a chronological fact... Not only is he absolutely authoritative in rooms around the globe, but in the Oval Office." She consistently assured the public of Biden's capability to serve.

In September 2023, Harris confidently said, "Joe Biden is gonna be fine." By March, she acknowledged her readiness to step in if necessary but reiterated that it wouldn't be needed, saying, "I'm ready, if necessary, but it's not gonna be necessary."

Resignation Sparks Controversy

The controversy erupted following Biden's decision to drop out of the presidential race after a poorly received debate performance. Clips of Harris defending Biden resurfaced, leading to accusations from conservative figures and GOP politicians on social media.

"She lied," conservative communicator Steve Guest posted on X, accusing Harris of being "complicit in a coverup."

Former acting Director of the United States National Intelligence Ric Grenell echoed these sentiments, claiming, "Kamala Harris wanted the nomination without a primary. She lied to the public about Joe’s actual health up until the last minute when a primary would be too late. She knew all along."

Criticism from GOP Politicians

Sen. J.D. Vance also took to social media, stating that Harris "lied for nearly four years about Biden's mental capacity--saddling the nation with a president who can't do the job."

GOP Sen. Tom Cotton joined the criticism, posting, "Kamala Harris lied to Americans for four years that Joe Biden was able to serve, sharp as a tack, fit as a fiddle."

Cotton further questioned Harris’s position, asking, "Now, she has to answer: if Joe Biden isn’t fit to run for president, do you believe that he’s fit to continue serving as president?"

GOP Congressman Darrell Issa added to the controversy, stating, "The cover up of Biden’s condition by Democrats and the media will go down as one of the biggest scandals in American history."

Calls for Accountability

As Harris steps into her new role as the Democratic frontrunner, the scrutiny on her past statements about Biden's health continues to intensify. The accusations of dishonesty and coverup pose significant challenges for her campaign and public image.

Harris is facing significant backlash for her previous reassurances about President Biden's health, with various political figures accusing her of misleading the public.

The controversy arose following Biden's resignation and Harris’s emergence as the Democratic frontrunner. Harris had consistently defended Biden's fitness for office in numerous public statements over the past year, but the resurfacing of these clips has led to a wave of criticism from conservative figures and GOP politicians, raising questions about her integrity and transparency regarding Biden's condition.
