Schumer Urges Trump to Choose New Running Mate

 July 29, 2024

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has openly criticized former President Donald Trump's decision to select Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate for the 2024 election, labeling it a poor choice that could benefit Democrats.

Schumer's comments came during an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday, during which he suggested that Trump might reconsider replacing his current vice-presidential choice before the Ohio ballot is locked in, as Fox News reports.

Schumer's Criticism Of Vance

The lawmaker a Democrat from New York, did not hold back in his assessment of Vance, calling him "an incredibly bad choice" and describing him as even more extreme and erratic than Trump himself. He speculated that Trump might already be rethinking his decision.

During the interview, Schumer emphasized the growing controversies surrounding Vance. "I think Donald Trump, I know him, and he's probably sitting and watching the TV, and every day, Vance, it comes out Vance has done something more extreme, more weird, more erratic," Schumer said. "Vance seems to be more erratic and more extreme than President Trump."

Schumer's remarks come at a critical time, with the Ohio ballot set to be finalized in just 10 days. He pointed out that Trump might need to decide whether to stick with Vance or pick a new running mate. "He already has a whole lot of baggage, he's probably going to be more baggage over the weeks because we'll hear more things about him, or does he pick someone new? What's his choice?" Schumer questioned.

Vance's Controversial Comments

Vance has been a polarizing figure since his selection as Trump's running mate, particularly due to comments he made in a 2021 interview. In that sit-down, Vance was seen has having disparaged "childless cat ladies" in the Democratic Party, leading to significant backlash.

He stated, "We are effectively run in this country, via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they wanna make the rest of the country miserable, too."

Chris LaCivita, a senior campaign adviser for Trump 2024, defended Vance, asserting that the interview was taken out of context and that the campaign does not oppose childless women.

National Attention and Criticism

Vance, known for his book, Hillbilly Elegy, gained national attention when Trump announced him as his vice presidential running mate at the Republican National Convention. His campaign has been positioned to resonate with working-class Americans, a key demographic for the Trump-Vance ticket.

However, Vice President Kamala Harris has been a vocal critic of Vance, arguing that he would be loyal only to Trump and not to the country. She described him as a "rubber stamp for [Trump's] extreme agenda."

Vance's Response To Harris

Vance did not hesitate to respond to Harris's criticisms during a campaign rally in Minnesota. He questioned Harris's loyalty to the country, stating, "Now, I saw the other day Kamala Harris questioned my loyalty to this country. That's the word she used, loyalty. And it's an interesting word. Semper Fi, because there is no greater sign of disloyalty to this country than what Kamala Harris has done at our southern border."

Vance continued to defend his patriotism, highlighting his service in the United States Marine Corps and his business achievements. "I served in the United States Marine Corps. I went to Iraq for this country. I built a business for this country. And my running mate took a bullet for this country. So, my question to Kamala Harris is, what the hell have you done to question our loyalty to the United States of America? And the answer, my friends, is nothing," Vance said.

Border Policy Debate

Schumer also took the opportunity to address border policy, a hot-button issue in American politics. He asserted that Democrats in Congress and the Biden-Harris administration had crafted a tough border policy that would have significantly curbed illegal immigration.

"We put together the toughest border policy that would have stopped the flow from the border that we've seen in a very long time," Schumer claimed.

Political Implications

According to Schumer, the Democratic border policy had garnered support from Republicans initially but faced opposition from Trump, who Schumer accused of wanting border chaos for political purposes.

"We're happy to bring that up. And case after case, when we bring that up, the voters side with us, not with their policies. We were willing to fix the border. Trump and his Republican minions said, 'Don't fix it, we want chaos for political purposes.' Who do you think's going to win the argument?" Schumer concluded.

Conclusion

In summary, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's strong criticism of J.D. Vance as Donald Trump's running mate highlights the contentious nature of the 2024 election.

Schumer's remarks, coupled with Vance's controversial past comments and the ongoing debate over border policy, underscore the deep political divisions in the country.

As the Ohio ballot deadline approaches, the question remains whether Trump will stand by Vance or choose a new running mate, a decision that could significantly impact the upcoming election.
