NBC Corrects Claim About Harris' Attendance at Dignified Transfer of Afghanistan Service Members

 September 2, 2024

A recent claim by NBC's Kristen Welker has been corrected after she inaccurately stated that Vice President Kamala Harris attended the dignified transfer of 13 U.S. service members killed during the Afghanistan withdrawal.

According to Fox News, Welker's erroneous assertion about Harris's presence at a critical event fueled a wave of scrutiny from various quarters.

The scenario has only added fuel to critiques of the Biden-Harris administration and allegations of inattention and indifference during a dire anniversary in the country's history.

Incorrect Claim on Harris's Attendance

On Sunday, Sen. Tom Cotton critiqued President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during an appearance on NBC's Meet the Press. Cotton slammed both leaders for allegedly ignoring the families of the fallen soldiers during a solemn ceremony marking their loved ones' untimely deaths.

"Joe Biden and Kamala Harris -- where were they? Joe Biden was sitting at a beach. Kamala Harris was sitting at her mansion in Washington, D.C. She was four miles away — ten minutes," Cotton said. "She could've gone to the cemetery and honored the sacrifice of those young men and women, but she hasn't."

Welker responded by claiming that both Biden and Harris met the families during the dignified transfer ceremony when the service members' bodies were returned to the U.S.

However, NBC's Meet the Press X account later posted a correction: "On our broadcast this morning, we incorrectly implied that both President Biden and Vice President Harris attended the dignified transfer of 13 American service members killed during the Afghanistan withdrawal. Biden was in attendance but Harris was not."

President Biden's Actions During the Transfer

President Biden’s actions during the dignified transfer also drew attention. It was noted that he "repeatedly checked his watch" during the solemn proceedings, a behavior that critics have scrutinized.

In contrast, former President Donald Trump attended a memorial event at Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate the third anniversary of the Afghanistan withdrawal, which resulted in the deaths of the 13 U.S. service members.

The Trump team was acknowledged for being respectful during the event. Christy Shamblin, the mother of fallen Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee, praised the Trump team for their respectful approach.

Shamblin criticized the mainstream media's coverage of the event, stating, "The Trump team is very, very respectful and cognizant. They wanted to be respectful to everyone there. The big news stories that the mainstream media covers about the [fallen] 13 aren’t stories of honor and respect. It’s hard to understand why."

She further expressed her dissatisfaction with the Biden administration's response: "I think one of the most devastating parts of having the administration really just ignore this and not speak their names and speak to us, is that you start to feel like your loss is really in vain."

Families Seek Recognition

Several families of the 13 fallen service members noted their lack of personal interaction with both Biden and Harris despite their efforts to contact the administration. Shamblin added that Biden only sent them a form letter, a gesture she found lacking in genuine compassion.

The correction on Harris's attendance underscores the broader implications of miscommunication and the emotional toll on the families of the fallen service members.

Cotton's remarks reflect a significant sentiment shared by many affected families: the feeling of being overlooked.

Conclusion

The juxtaposition of these events highlights the complexities and emotional strain involved in the lingering aftermath of the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The NBC correction serves as a reminder of the importance of accuracy in reporting sensitive and significant events.

As the families of the fallen seek closure and recognition, the political landscape remains fraught with tension and scrutiny as the election season heats up.
