Nancy Sununu, Former New Hampshire First Lady, Dies at Age 85

 September 10, 2024

Nancy Sununu, a stalwart of New Hampshire's political landscape, has died at 85.

Mrs. Sununu, remembered for her gentle yet influential role in both family and political spheres, passed away this weekend due to undisclosed causes, as New Hampshire Public Radio reports.

As the wife of former Gov. John H. Sununu Nancy Sununu stood by her husband's side during his tenure from 1983 to 1989. She witnessed and contributed to numerous political campaigns and events, and her presence was marked by a quiet but firm grace that resonated within the Republican circles in New Hampshire.

Longstanding Commitment to Family and Politics

The Sununus recently celebrated 65 years of marriage in a testament to their enduring partnership.

Nancy's role as a mother was just as significant, raising eight children, including current Gov. Chris Sununu and former U.S. Senator John E. Sununu, shaping a legacy that extends deep into both state and national politics.

Her family remembers her as a beacon of kindness and an anchor of support not only for her children but also for the numerous political figures she guided throughout her life.

A Life Rich in Contributions and Interests

Nancy Sununu's contributions went beyond the political arena; she was an active participant in her community and possessed a diverse range of skills from sports to crafts.

According to her family and friends, Nancy was an accomplished athlete, and her hands-on skills in carpentry allowed her to undertake many home projects.

Her practical skills were not just hobbies but also a way to connect with her family and the community, passing on the lessons of resilience and resourcefulness she valued so much.

Remembering a Pillar of the Community

Christine Peters, president of the New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women, spoke highly of Nancy, describing her as a person who could "light up a room with a smile."

Peters also highlighted Nancy's graciousness, noting, "I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone. She was incredibly gracious. And she and John together made a great First Family for New Hampshire."

The family's remembrance noted, "Widely rumored to possess almost limitless abilities, Nancy's prowess extended to skiing, golfing, and baseball, where her sharp eye at the plate was as keen as her accurate pitch."

End of an Era: The Community Bids Farewell

The Sununu family has not provided a cause of death. In memory of Nancy, they have suggested donations to the Alzheimer's Association, highlighting her commitment to community causes even in remembrance.

The community will have a chance to pay their respects during the calling hours scheduled at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home in Hampton from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Final Goodbyes: A Ceremony of Remembrance

A funeral mass will be held for Nancy Sununu at St. Theresa’s Parish in Rye at 10 a.m. on Friday, which will be followed by a private burial at Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem.

The ceremonies are expected to draw many from across the state and beyond, coming together to honor a woman who was not only a matriarch and wife but a true servant to the public.

The legacy of Nancy Sununu is encapsulated in the roles she embraced wholeheartedly -- as a mother, spouse, and a quiet force in political and community spheres.

Her memory will undoubtedly continue to inspire those who knew her and those who will come to know her through the stories shared by her family and community.
