JonBenét Ramsey's Father Appeals to Police for DNA Testing30 Years After Daugher's Death

 November 22, 2024

In 1996, the Ramsey family was thrust into a lingering nightmare when 6-year-old JonBenét, a child beauty queen, was brutally murdered in their Boulder, Colorado, home.

Today, John Ramsey, her 80-year-old father, is pushing for the Boulder police to adopt advanced DNA testing techniques he believes could finally solve the case, as the Daily Caller reports.

John Ramsey's Continued Quest for Justice

John Ramsey recently expressed his frustrations in an interview with People magazine. He criticized the local police for their apparent disinterest in utilizing cutting-edge DNA technologies that could identify the killer.

Despite the passing years, his determination to find his daughter’s murderer and gain closure remains unyielded.

He highlighted that several top-tier DNA laboratories have expressed their willingness to assist in the investigation. These labs are equipped to analyze even the most minute genetic traces left at crime scenes, potentially leading to a breakthrough in the case.

During the initial investigation, a handmade garrote used to strangle JonBenét was among the items sent for testing, only to be returned unexamined. John Ramsey revealed his confusion and frustration over the police’s decision not to test crucial evidence.

Advanced DNA Testing Could Unlock Answers

John Ramsey believes that employing genetic genealogy could be the key to unlocking the murderer's identity. This approach has solved numerous cold cases by linking DNA evidence to family members of potential suspects.

However, for this technology to be utilized, the existing DNA samples must be reprocessed to meet current research standards.

He has advocated for the examination of seven specific crime scene items, which were either never tested or not tested adequately using today's advanced methods.

His plea includes retesting items with the potential to reveal new information under modern forensic scrutiny.

"We’re begging the police to engage," John Ramsey implored. He stressed the necessity for the Boulder Police Department to embrace outside help if they hope to solve this longstanding mystery.

Obstacles in Reopening the Investigation

The control of the investigation rests solely with the Boulder police chief, who must approve any collaboration with external agencies or labs. "The chief of police is in charge. Nobody can come in and help him with solving a crime unless he asks for help. We’re not asking them to do anything weird,” Ramsey pointed out. “Just do your job. Test the DNA.”

This administrative hurdle poses a significant barrier to making progress in the case, according to Ramsey, who expressed little confidence in the case being resolved if it remains solely under local police jurisdiction.

He continued to argue for the potential of advanced DNA testing: "But to do the latest stuff, this whole genealogy research, they needed a different format of the sample,” he explained. This means that the correct type of DNA sample must be prepared to allow for thorough genealogical research and matching.

Public Interest and Media Attention

The ongoing public fascination with the JonBenét Ramsey case is evident as Netflix prepares to release a three-part series titled “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?” which will premiere next Monday. This series promises to delve into the details of the investigation and the various theories that have surfaced over the years.

John Ramsey's recent public appeals may reignite interest in the case, potentially putting pressure on the authorities to take further action.

As he firmly believes, "If it stays in the hands of the Boulder Police, it will not be solved, period. If they accept help, all the help that’s out there, available and offered, it will be solved. Yes, I believe it will be solved."

In the face of these challenges, the determination of a grieving father reflects the hope of many who seek justice for JonBenét, even after 30 years of unanswered questions.
