In a move that underscores judicial integrity, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has stepped down from an upcoming environmental case due to a conflict of interest.

Gorsuch recused himself from a case about a proposed railway in Utah after concerns were raised about his previous associations with a key investor, as Reuters reports.

The case, which will be argued next Tuesday, involves a proposed railway intended to facilitate the transport of waxy crude oil by connecting the Uinta Basin to the broader freight rail network.

Gorsuch's decision to step aside is based on ethical concerns linked to his prior legal work for businessman Philip Anschutz, who has financial stakes in the railway project.

The Anschutz Exploration Corporation, among other companies related to Anschutz, could be significantly impacted by the outcome of this case, which challenges the adequacy of environmental impact studies under the 1970 National Environmental Policy Act.
