Turning Point USA calls for ABC affiliates to drop 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'
In a striking move amid national mourning, Turning Point USA is pressing ABC affiliates to refuse future airing of Jimmy Kimmel Live! as the show prepares to return from a recent suspension, as Newsmax reports.
This controversy stems from comedian Jimmy Kimmel's contentious remarks about the assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk, sparking outrage and a temporary halt of his show ahead of Disney's decision to reinstate it on Tuesday.
Kirk, a prominent conservative figure and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically murdered at a Utah college campus, an event that shocked the nation due to its violent and political nature.
Assassination shocks nation, spurs controversy
Authorities in Utah revealed early on in the murder probe that the 22-year-old suspect in Kirk's killing had reportedly shifted toward left-leaning political views and targeted Kirk specifically for his public conservative stances.
This assassination has intensified political tensions, with many conservatives expressing grief and anger over the loss of a key voice in their community.
Amid this emotional backdrop, Kimmel addressed the incident during his monologue last Monday on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Kimmel's remarks ignite backlash
In his segment, Kimmel took aim at conservative groups, accusing them of distorting the narrative around Kirk's killer for political gain.
He specifically criticized what he called the "MAGA gang," stating they were "desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."
These comments triggered immediate backlash from conservatives, who accused Kimmel of disrespecting Kirk's memory and trivializing a grave national tragedy during a time of mourning.
Disney suspends show amid public outcry
The outrage led to swift action from Disney, ABC's parent company, which suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week to prevent further escalation of tensions.
According to a statement reported by NBC News, Disney paused the show "to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country," adding that they found some of Kimmel's remarks "ill-timed and thus insensitive."
This decision reflected the company's attempt to navigate the delicate balance between free expression and public sentiment during a period of heightened emotion.
Reinstatement faces opposition
On Monday, Disney announced that after several days of "thoughtful conversations" with Kimmel, they would allow "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to resume broadcasting on Tuesday night.
However, this reinstatement has drawn sharp criticism from Turning Point USA, with spokesman Andrew Kolvet publicly condemning the move as a misstep by ABC and Disney and praising Sinclair and Nexstar, owners of a large number of ABC affiliate stations, for their decision to continue their preemption of the show for now.
Kolvet, who also serves as executive producer of The Charlie Kirk Show, took to X to express his frustration, stating, "Disney and ABC caving and allowing Kimmel back on the air is not surprising, but it's their mistake to make. Nexstar and Sinclair do not have to make the same choice."
