Trump hints at potential DOJ probe into former FBI chief Christopher Wray

 September 29, 2025

President Donald Trump dropped a bombshell on Sunday, suggesting that the Department of Justice might be investigating former FBI Director Christopher Wray over his actions during his tenure, as The Hill reports.

Trump's comments, made amid ongoing tensions with former FBI leaders and recent legal actions against ex-Director James Comey, have reignited debates over the agency’s conduct under past administrations.

Trump's history with the FBI has been contentious, beginning with his firing of Comey, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, during his first term.

Clashing with FBI leadership

After dismissing Comey, Trump nominated Wray to replace him, a decision he later regretted and publicly criticized.

Trump had intended to fire Wray before the end of the Biden administration, but Wray resigned just before Trump returned to office.

Upon Wray’s resignation, Trump hailed it as “a great day for America,” particularly citing the FBI’s 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago estate during an investigation into his handling of classified documents.

Recent Comey charges fuel tensions

Recent developments have added fuel to the fire, with a federal prosecutor appointed by Trump charging Comey with providing a false statement to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Comey, who has maintained his innocence, is scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 9 in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking on Fox News Sunday, noted that Comey “will have his day in court” and predicted more indictments during Trump’s current term.

Allegations of Jan. 6 misconduct emerge

Over the weekend, Trump escalated his criticism of Wray on social media, stating that Wray “has some major explaining to do” regarding a report from The Blaze claiming federal agents were present in the crowd during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol unrest.

Trump further claimed on Truth Social that these agents were “probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists, but certainly not as ‘Law Enforcement Officials.’”

Current FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News Digital that agents were dispatched for a “crowd control mission after the riot was declared by Metro Police,” but he criticized the decision as going “against FBI standards.”

Trump takes strong stand

Patel also accused past “corrupt leadership” at the FBI of having “lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened” on that day.

On Sunday, Trump told NBC News that he would “certainly imagine” the DOJ is looking into Wray’s conduct, adding that Wray “did a terrible job and we just found out about it.”

Trump also described Wray’s tenure as “very inappropriate,” though he clarified, “we haven’t gone beyond that,” leaving the status of any potential investigation unclear.
