Illinois governor slams Trump’s plan for National Guard deployment

 October 5, 2025

In a stunning escalation of tensions between state and federal authorities, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has publicly condemned a move by President Donald Trump to federalize 300 Illinois National Guard members for deployment in Chicago.

In a series of statements and posts, Pritzker revealed that the Trump administration is preparing to send these troops to Chicago following violent incidents targeting federal agents and facilities in Illinois, a decision he described as both outrageous and against American values, as Breitbart reports.

The controversy began when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported increasing threats to federal personnel and property in Illinois. According to DHS, recent incidents included an attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, Texas, which prompted a request for military support to protect agents and facilities in Illinois.

Violent clashes prompt federal action

One significant event occurred in Broadview, near Chicago, where DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin reported that federal agents on routine patrol were targeted. She stated, “This morning, during routine patrolling in Broadview, in the same area of Chicago that law enforcement were assaulted yesterday, our brave law enforcement officers were rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars.”

McLaughlin further explained the severity of the situation, saying, “Agents were unable to move their vehicles and exited the car.” She added that the agents ultimately “fired defensive shots at an armed US citizen” in response to the threat.

Social media has also captured the unrest, with videos showing protesters in Chicago throwing rocks and other objects at federal vehicles. These incidents have heightened concerns about the safety of federal personnel operating in the area.

Governor rebukes federal plans

In response to these events, Gov. Pritzker announced that the Trump administration, through the Department of War, had issued a direct ultimatum to him. He recounted the demand, stating, “This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will.”

Pritzker did not mince words in his criticism of this federal directive. He declared, “It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.”

The governor also shared a pressing timeline, warning that “in the coming hours, the Trump administration intends to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard.” This rapid action has fueled his opposition to the federal government’s approach.

Concerns over potential impact on families

Pritzker expressed deep concern about the personal toll this federalization would take on Illinois residents. He argued that such a move would “pull hardworking Americans out of their regular jobs and away from their families all to participate in a manufactured performance.”

The governor’s remarks highlight the potential disruption to the lives of National Guard members who serve in civilian roles when not activated. Many of these individuals could be forced to leave their jobs and families on short notice to comply with federal orders.

This deployment, according to Pritzker, is not a response to a genuine state emergency but rather a political maneuver. His characterization of the situation as a staged event has added to the growing controversy surrounding the federal government’s actions.

Broader context of tensions unfolds

The backdrop to this conflict includes earlier communications between Pritzker and federal authorities. Breitbart News reported that the governor had previously acknowledged a request from DHS to the Department of War for military personnel to safeguard ICE agents and facilities in Illinois after the Dallas incident.

However, Pritzker’s current stance reflects a sharp pivot against federal intervention within his state. His vocal opposition underscores a broader tension between state autonomy and federal authority during times of civil unrest.

As the situation unfolds, both state and federal officials remain at odds over the best course of action to ensure safety while respecting the rights and roles of Illinois citizens. The deployment of National Guard members, if carried out, could set a significant precedent for how such conflicts are resolved in the future.
