Salaam, who played a pivotal role in transforming the Jets' defense, will be remembered for his sporting achievements and gentle demeanor, as the Daily Mail reports.

Salaam was born in Alabama in 1953 with the birth name Larry Faulk. In 1977, he underwent a significant transformation, choosing to rename himself Abdul Salaam, which translates to "Soldier of Peace." His new name reflected his character both in his personal life and in his approach to the game.

"Sack Exchange" Emerges

Playing as a defensive tackle for the New York Jets from 1976 to 1983, Salaam became a cornerstone of the team's defense. His most notable years were spent as a key player in the Jets' defensive line, famously called the "Sack Exchange."

This quartet, which included Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko, and Marty Lyons, was instrumental in meeting opposing quarterbacks with relentless pressure.

The highlight of Salaam's career came in 1981. That year, the Sack Exchange was at its peak, helping the Jets clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 1969. The defensive squad recorded an impressive 66 quarterback sacks, underlining their imposing presence on the field.

Their exceptional season earned the Sack Exchange an invitation to open the New York Stock Exchange's trading day with the ringing of the opening bell, marking a historic moment for the team and its defensive stalwarts.

Transition from NFL to Life in Ohio

Following his retirement from professional football, Salaam chose to return to the Cincinnati area, a place he knew well from his high school days. His post-football life was defined by his quiet and peaceful demeanor, a reflection of his chosen name.

Throughout his career, Salaam earned the respect and admiration of his teammates. Marty Lyons recollects Salaam's influence, describing him as well-respected and adored within the locker room.

Lyons remarked, "He was so soft-spoken, but he was a big part of what we accomplished." Salaam's commitment on the field was matched by his character beyond the stadium.

Gastineau expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Salaam. He shared that he felt as though he had lost his best friend and acknowledged Salaam's indispensable support during their time together.

"If it wasn't for Abdul, I wouldn't have made it," Gastineau stated, highlighting their close bond.

The Soldier of Peace's Continued Legacy

Salaam's impact on the Jets and the sport was profound. In a 2019 interview, Salaam reflected on his efforts and those of his teammates during the era of the Sack Exchange. He reminisced that they quickly adapted to changes, which led to their success. Salaam's transition from defensive end to tackle underscored his flexibility and determination.

He vividly compared the dynamic of playing on the defensive line to a heavyweight boxing match, emphasizing the importance of being resilient and maintaining one's balance through constant pressure and energy on the field. "It was just a coldblooded struggle," he noted, capturing the intense atmosphere of those games.

The football community mourns the loss of a man who made a lasting impression both as a player and as an individual of peace. Salaam's widow, Debbie, confirmed his passing following health issues that he had been battling.
