Alan Dershowitz pledges to help Republicans win midterm elections

 October 8, 2025

Hold onto your hats, folks -- Harvard Law’s own professor emeritus, Alan Dershowitz, a lifelong Democrat, just dropped a political bombshell by declaring he’ll campaign for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections, as the Daily Caller reports.

On Newsmax’s The Record with Greta Van Susteren, Dershowitz announced his stunning departure from the Democratic Party after over six decades of loyalty, citing their drift toward extremism and abandonment of constitutional values as the breaking point.

This isn’t a casual sidestep; Dershowitz is going all-in to ensure Republicans maintain control of Congress.

Dershowitz slams Democrats' extremism

During his Tuesday appearance, Dershowitz didn’t hold back, accusing Democrats of weaponizing extreme rhetoric against former President Donald Trump.

He pointed to figures like former Vice President Kamala Harris, who labeled Trump a “fascist,” and Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who repeatedly likened him to historical tyrants, as examples of this dangerous trend.

It’s not just words that concern him -- it’s the broader shift he sees in a party he once called home.

A frightening vision of control

Dershowitz expressed deep alarm over what might happen if Democrats gain control of either the House or Senate, warning of problematic committee appointments and a return to oppressive tactics.

“They’re not succeeding in persuading the American people that they’re up to a leadership role, which is why, after me being a Democrat for 60 or more years, I am now going to campaign very hard for the Republicans to maintain control of the House and the Senate,” Dershowitz said on Newsmax.

“I’m totally frightened if the Democrats were to gain control of either House—who they would appoint as chair people, who they would put in the position of inquisitors, and how they would deny rights to people, and how they would introduce a kind of McCarthyism that we haven’t seen since I was a college student in the 1950s?” he added.

Left-wing McCarthyism on the rise

He didn’t mince words, calling this shift “left-wing McCarthyism” and suggesting it’s infecting much of the Democratic Party with a focus on harming Trump rather than governing responsibly.

Amid this critique, Dershowitz offered a rare nod of respect to Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, praising him as a lone voice of principle and bipartisanship in a party veering off course.

One wonders if the progressive agenda will take note of such internal dissent or just keep doubling down on divisive tactics.

Voter sentiment and political polls

Meanwhile, recent data from CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten shows 52% of voters believe Trump is delivering on campaign promises, with a steady approval rating of 43% tied to key issues like border security and inflation.

Polls also indicate a tight race, with Democrats holding a slim lead in generic ballot matchups -- two points per the New York Times and four points per Yahoo/YouGov -- hardly a mandate for radical change.

Dershowitz’s defection might just be the wake-up call conservatives need to rally, while leaving Democrats to ponder if their hard-left turn is alienating even their staunchest allies.
