Arizona State Senate Hopeful Dies in DUI Crash After Conceding Election

 November 17, 2024

John McLean, a Democratic Party candidate for the Arizona Senate, tragically lost his life in a DUI crash in Tucson shortly after conceding the District 17 seat to his opponent.

On Friday in Tucson, John McLean's campaign came to a tragic halt when the 68-year-old Democrat was involved in a fatal collision when Michael Martin Creel, accused of driving under the influence, ran a stop sign and struck McLean's vehicle, as Fox News reports.

The impact of the crash was severe, attributed to high speed and impairment. This incident occurred less than 24 hours after McLean had publicly conceded the election to Republican Vince Leach.

Community Mourns as Police Detain Suspect

Following the incident, Creel, 27, was arrested and taken to Pima County Jail.

He faces charges of manslaughter and aggravated DUI, marking a grim repeat of his past, as a previous DUI case against him was dismissed in December 2023.

The Tucson Police Department confirmed that their investigation into the crash is ongoing, focusing on the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event. The community and local officials have reacted with sorrow and disbelief over the sudden loss.

Arizona Senate Democrats expressed their heartbreak, acknowledging McLean's dedication to his state and his final efforts to secure a Senate seat for District 17.

They extended their deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones, highlighting his role as a relentless advocate for Arizona.

Election Night Turns to Mourning

McLean had just faced a defeat in the elections, with results showing him trailing Leach by over 3,000 votes. Despite the loss, McLean had remained positive about his campaign's impact and the efforts of his team.

In his last update to supporters via his campaign Facebook page, he described his run as an honor and a privilege, proud of the work done despite the unfavorable outcome.

His words reflected a spirit of dedication and hope for his community's future.

Vince Leach, the victor of the Senate contest, shared his condolences, recognizing McLean as a good man and an honorable opponent, underscoring the respect held between the two candidates despite their political rivalry.

Leaders Offer Condolences and Remembrance

State Sen. Mitzi Epstein and Gov. Katie Hobbs also offered their condolences. Epstein remembered her recent conversation with McLean, noting his unwavering optimism and commitment to serving Arizona.

She spoke of his volunteer spirit and the long hours he dedicated to the campaign trail.

Hobbs praised McLean as a true public servant, emphasizing his deep care for the community and his desire to always do what was best for his constituents.

She lamented the tragic loss, sending love to those who knew and worked with him.

The community and political peers alike are mourning the loss of a man who dedicated much of his life to public service, remembering him not only for his political aspirations but also for his character and commitment to Arizona.
