Biden Administration Allegedly Withheld Crucial Lab Leak Data

 December 27, 2024

A recent report claims that the Biden administration suppressed information from U.S. intelligence agencies indicating that a lab leak in China was the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report highlights ongoing disagreements among U.S. agencies about the pandemic's origins and alleges that the Biden administration attempted to limit public exposure to the lab leak theory, as the Daily Wire reports.

In August 2021, National Intelligence Director Avril Haines briefed President Joe Biden on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Notably absent from the meeting was the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), even though the agency had assessed that a lab leak was the likely cause of the pandemic. The FBI's evaluation was made with "moderate confidence."

Assessments by Various Government Agencies

While the FBI maintained their standpoint, four other government departments leaned toward a zoonotic origin of COVID-19. However, these departments admitted to having "low confidence" in their determination. This divergence in assessments has contributed to the continuing debate over the origins of the virus.

According to the Wall Street Journal investigation, which alleges that Biden's administration attempted to withhold lab leak information, discrepancies between agencies reflect the challenges faced in confirming the virus's origins.

Debates about the cause of the pandemic have been further complicated by differing interpretations of evidence.

Adrienne Keen, formerly with the State Department, was influential in promoting the World Health Organization's (WHO) report that supported a zoonotic origin. Keen’s stance is controversial, partly because China allegedly blocked the WHO from accessing critical evidence.

Controversial Stances and Scientific Theories

The FBI challenged a hypothesis suggesting the virus originated from a bat coronavirus located far from Wuhan, China. The agency argued against the hypothesis, citing a lack of case detections between the bat's location and Wuhan. As such, the FBI withstood pressure to shift its assessment away from a lab leak theory.

Concurrently, leading scientists at the National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI) suggested that the coronavirus was genetically altered in a Chinese lab.

Officials there based their assertion on genomic analysis, which they believed indicated laboratory manipulation. However, in July 2021, these scientists were directed not to share their findings with the FBI any longer.

An investigation was subsequently launched by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) Inspector General’s office. The inquiry scrutinized the alleged suppression of the scientists’ research on the lab origins theory of COVID-19.

Claims of Suppression and Investigations

The Department of Energy and the FBI are two agencies that have assessed the virus likely originated from a Chinese lab. Yet, the voices of scientists supporting this theory were reportedly stifled; 90% of NCMI's submissions for a report on the matter were removed.

Jason Bannan from the FBI expressed surprise about their exclusion from the critical August briefing. He stated, "Being the only agency that assessed that a laboratory origin was more likely, and the agency that expressed the highest level of confidence... we anticipated the FBI would be asked to attend." He found it unexpected that the White House had not extended such an invitation.

Thomas DiNanno, former acting assistant secretary of State, brought additional attention to Keen, discovering that she had ties as an outside advisor to WHO. DiNanno described the WHO as a "political agency," raising concerns about Keen’s dual role due to WHO's status as a United Nations agency.

Support for the Lab Leak Theory

Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe also asserted the lab leak theory as the most plausible explanation for the origins of COVID-19.

Ratcliffe mentioned, "The people that had the most access to the most intelligence... are telling you that the most likely origin... was a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology." This statement reflects the consensus among some top officials who had access to critical intelligence data.

The contentious debate over the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to underscore divisions among U.S. intelligence agencies and broader political implications. Each new revelation adds complexity to understanding the virus's beginnings, illustrating the challenges faced by those attempting to unravel this global health mystery.
