Biden Awards Medal of Freedom to Michelle Yeoh, Nancy Pelosi, Others, Adds Subtle Trump Jab

 May 5, 2024

At a prestigious White House ceremony, President Joe Biden honored 19 distinguished Americans with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

In an event marked by personal commendations and lighthearted moments, President Biden recognized leaders from politics, sports, and entertainment for their significant contributions, even those that have sparked controversy among some, as the Daily Mail reports.

The recipients of the Medal of Freedom included political heavyweights such as former Vice President Al Gore, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and longtime Sen. John Kerry.

These individuals were celebrated not only for their political achievements but also for specific acts of valor and commitment to democracy.

Al Gore's Concession and Commitment to Unity

Biden particularly noted Gore's concession after the 2000 presidential election, a moment he said involved putting national unity above personal ambition.

“After winning the popular vote he accepted the outcome...for the sake of unity and trust in our institutions," Biden remarked, lauding Gore for his decision during a challenging time.

Gore's action set a precedent for democratic transitions and was highlighted as a notable moment of moral courage.

Biden Recalls Kerry's Public Service and Valor

Kerry was also in the spotlight, both for his political career and military service. Biden recalled Kerry's 2004 presidential bid and his service during the Vietnam War, which earned him a Silver Star.

“I can personally attest that my dear friend has as much moral courage in his pursuit of American politics as he did physical courage,” Biden stated.

This acknowledgment was complemented by a touch of humor from Biden, who quipped about not delving into certain details of Kerry’s reception of his medal.

Nancy Pelosi and Jan. 6

Pelosi was recognized for her role on January 6, which Biden said involved standing firm as the Capitol was besieged.

“On January 6, Nancy stood in the breach and defended democracy,” Biden said, commending her bravery. He predicted that history would remember Pelosi as “the greatest speaker of the House of Representatives.”

Beyond politics, figures from other sectors were also honored. Katie Ledecky, described by Biden as the "greatest female swimmer of all time," and actress Michelle Yeoh were among the standout names.

Yeoh, noted for her achievements in film, had a light-hearted moment when Biden mistakenly called her "Michael" before quickly correcting himself.

Inspirations from Sports and Entertainment

From the pool to the film industry, these recipients like Yeoh and Ledecky have not only achieved personal success but also inspired countless others. Their stories resonate beyond their fields, embodying the triumph of dedication and talent.

Among other recipients were leaders and pioneers from various fields including Phil Donahue, Elizabeth Dole, and civil rights icons like the late Medgar Evers. Each has made substantial contributions to their communities and fields, earning them this significant recognition.

Presidential Medal of Freedom: A Celebratory Affair

The event was not only about acknowledging major feats but also about infusing the solemn occasion with humor. Biden used light-hearted remarks to keep the atmosphere lively, poking fun at the complex political careers and historic realities faced by the honorees such as Gore and Kerry.

Amidst the formalities, moments of unity and camaraderie were clearly visible, as demonstrated when Michelle Yeoh embraced Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole. Such gestures underscored the event's overarching theme of bipartisan respect and acknowledgment of service.
