Biden Discusses Health With Democratic Governors After Damaging Debate

 July 5, 2024

In a crucial meeting with over 20 Democrat governors, President Joe Biden addressed concerns about his health following a turbulent debate performance.

President Biden reassured key Democratic leaders of his health and campaign plans during a private conversation on Wednesday, despite the on-stage collapse witnessed the week before, as Newsmax reports.

Earlier in the week, political circles buzzed with speculation about Biden's cognitive abilities after a public debate with Donald Trump seemed to highlight potential health issues. Politico reported that this meeting was planned as a direct response designed to calm the waters stirred by these events.

Biden's Health Front and Center in Governor Discussions

During the session, attended by 12 governors in person and others virtually, Biden was forthright about his recent medical checkup. He confirmed his health was stable, easing some of the concerns among his party's leadership.

Governors, including Kathy Hochul of New York, Tim Walz of Minnesota, and Larry Hogan of Maryland participated. These leaders later expressed renewed confidence in Biden, appreciating his transparency about the situation.

Concerns Linger Among Some Democratic Leaders

Despite reassurances, not all feedback was positive. New Mexico's Michelle Lujan Grisham and Maine's Janet Mills voiced apprehensions about Biden's prospects in their respective states for the upcoming elections.

This sentiment was somewhat reflected in the broader party dialogue, with concerns persisting about Biden's image and electability.

An anonymous staffer hinted at the internal strife, saying, "They got through today, but it's still very unclear where this goes."

White House Responds to Fitness Queries

Adding to the day's events, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tackled questions about Biden's fitness for office. She pointed out that the President undergoes regular health assessments, the results of which are publicly disclosed.

"The president has regular annual physicals that we release in a thorough report. We're going to continue to do that," Jean-Pierre reiterated, hoping to quell further speculation.

Recent Medical Visits and Public Concerns

The White House confirmed Biden's last comprehensive physical was conducted in February.

However, it later emerged that he has been checked by doctors more frequently due to minor ailments such as a recent cold.

"Several days later [following the debate], the President was seen to check on his cold and was recovering well," stated White House spokesperson Andrew Bates. No neurological scans have been performed since the debate, which added to public curiosity about the president's health.

Biden's Strategy Moving Forward

Biden has expressed a strong desire to hit the road, engaging directly with voters to bolster his campaign.

He aims to shed the "Grandpa Joe" image, which some see as detrimental, and reconnect with his "Scranton Joe" roots, known for resonating well with the electorate.

"To me, that's getting back to the 'Scranton Joe' stuff," a staffer commented, encapsulating the sentiment within Biden's team about returning to a more relatable campaign style.

In conclusion, President Biden's meeting with Democrat governors served as a platform to reaffirm his health status and campaign intentions. While it restored confidence among many, it also highlighted ongoing concerns within the party about his image and electability.

The dialogue remains open, with Biden committed to more active and engaging campaigning efforts in the lead-up to the next election cycle.
