Pelosi Weighs in on Biden's Initial Pledge to Remain in Presidential Race

 August 12, 2024
In a dramatic turn of events, President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has since questioned the authenticity of Biden’s initial commitment to run, suggesting that the letter that first announced his candidacy didn’t sound like him, as the Washington Examiner reports.

Biden Initially Committed to Run

On July 8, President Joe Biden sent a letter to congressional Democrats, stating his intention to remain in the 2024 presidential race. He planned to run against former President Donald Trump, setting off a wave of reactions within the Democratic Party.

This announcement came just days after the first presidential debate, which was held on June 27, where Biden was still an active candidate. The debate marked the beginning of the intense political season leading up to the 2024 elections.

Two days after sending the letter, Pelosi appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe. She indicated that it was ultimately Biden's decision to run, emphasizing the need for a decision as time was running short.

Pelosi's Response and Doubts

Reflecting on Biden’s letter, Nancy Pelosi expressed doubts about its authenticity. She stated, “I didn’t accept the letter as anything but a letter. I mean, there are some people who are unhappy with the letter. Let me say it differently: some said that some people were unhappy with the letter.”

Pelosi further added, “I’ll put it in somebody else’s mouth because it was a… I don’t even, it didn’t sound like Joe Biden to me. It really didn’t."

Her comments on the authenticity of the letter hinted at internal disputes and skepticism within the party about Biden's candidacy.

Biden Withdraws and Endorses Harris

Less than two weeks after his initial announcement, on July 21, President Joe Biden revealed that he was dropping out of the race.

In a surprising move, he quickly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee.

This decision came during a crucial period, with Pelosi stating that her earlier comments about Biden were meant to direct focus towards his significant role at the NATO Summit. “And they’re doing great things, and he’s the center of it all. Save your comments for later,” she remarked.

Biden’s departure left a notable, yet quickly fillled, gap in the race, prompting immediate strategic shifts within the Democratic Party.

Harris As the Democratic Nominee

Harris, now the Democratic nominee, chose Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate. The selection of Walz aimed to bolster the Democratic ticket with his executive experience and progressive agenda.

Harris and Walz quickly garnered support, securing certification as the Democratic Party’s official 2024 presidential ticket. Their campaign has set the stage for a significant showdown with Trump.

The upcoming debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is scheduled for Sept. 10 and will be hosted by ABC News. This debate is anticipated to be a defining moment in the 2024 presidential race.

Looking Ahead to the Next Debate

The Harris-Walz ticket faces the formidable challenge of uniting the Democratic Party and rallying voters ahead of the debates and the election. Pelosi's skepticism about Biden’s letter continues to resonate, reflecting broader concerns within the party about leadership and unity.

As the campaign trail heats up, all eyes will be on Harris as she prepares to confront Trump in what promises to be a high-stakes debate. This event is expected to offer a glimpse into the policies and visions that could shape the nation's future.

The next few weeks will be crucial for the Harris-Walz campaign as they seek to establish their candidate platform and work to gather momentum leading into the election.
