Biden gets confused, mixes up Cabinet members immediately after KJP defends cognition
At a recent White House event, President Joe Biden misidentified his Cabinet members, intensifying concerns about his mental acuity.
The incident took place during a gathering of Biden's reproductive rights task force. The president intended to express gratitude towards his gender policy advisor, Jen Klein, and Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
However, he inadvertently pointed out Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary, who was seated beside Klein. This error occurred shortly after White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had vouched for Biden's mental sharpness in response to probing questions from the media, as the Daily Mail reported.
Biden's latest gaffe raises brows
Acknowledging the efforts of his gender policy advisor, Biden said:
I also like to thank the gender policy advisor, my gender policy adviser, Jen Klein. Where's Jen sitting? There you are, Jen. Thank you. And Secretary Becerra, sitting right next to her, for the leadership in this task force.
But it was Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas who was actually sitting next to Jen Klein in the event.
White House defends Biden's mental sharpness
During a preceding press briefing, Jean-Pierre was questioned about public concerns regarding Biden's mental sharpness.
This inquiry was based on recent polls showing a decline in the public's confidence in Biden's cognitive abilities compared to Donald Trump.
Jean-Pierre highlighted Biden's legislative achievements as evidence of his mental acuity, emphasizing the significance of the bipartisan infrastructure deal and other major legislative accomplishments under his presidency. She said:
I have to say that's a little confusing for me, because if you look at what this president has done in the last three years, historical pieces of legislation, right?
She pointed out the long-term impact of these legislations, asserting that they would bring about positive changes for future generations. Her remarks were in direct response to the criticism and doubts being cast on Biden's capability to lead effectively due to his age.
Public perception and political rivals' scrutiny
Recent polls have indicated a growing public skepticism about Biden's mental fitness for the presidency.
The ABC News survey revealed a stark contrast in the public's perception of the mental sharpness and physical fitness of Biden compared to Trump.
Interestingly, both leaders have witnessed a decline in their ratings since a survey conducted in May.
Donald Trump, too, faced scrutiny over his mental fitness following an incident in which he confused Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi.
Trump responded to the criticism by affirming the strength of his cognitive abilities and mentioning a recent cognitive test he claimed to have aced.
Biden's past mix-ups and public reactions
President Biden's recent mix-up at the White House is not an isolated incident.
In a speech in North Carolina, Biden briefly got confused while attempting to acknowledge the presence of Democratic Rep. Deborah Ross, who was not at the event.
Though he attempted to inject humor into the situation saying, "Oh, she couldn't be here, actually. That's not true. I got it mixed up," the moment added to the series of gaffes that have raised concerns about his mental agility.
This event, coupled with the latest mix-up during the reproductive rights task force meeting, has intensified the focus on Biden's age and cognitive capabilities, stirring debates and discussions across the political spectrum.
