Biden's 'Don't' Warnings Deemed Ineffective as US Bases in Mideast Continue to Suffer Attacks

 August 12, 2024

As tensions escalate in the Middle East, U.S. military bases continue to face attacks, despite President Joe Biden's clear warnings to Iran.

President Joe Biden's infamous "don't" exhortation toward Iran's provocations appears increasingly ineffective, as attacks on U.S. forces persist in Iraq and Syria and casualties mount, as Fox News reports.

On Monday, American military personnel suffered injuries when Tehran-backed militias struck the Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq.

This incident marked a significant escalation in the series of attacks affecting U.S. interests in the region.Following this attack, President Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, convened a meeting with their national security team to assess the situation and refine the U.S. strategy against Iranian threats.

The severity of the threat was underscored again on Friday when another attack, believed to be carried out by Tehran-backed militias, occurred in Syria, injuring U.S. and coalition personnel.

A Pattern of Increasing Tensions and Inadequate Responses

These incidents have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. He accused the Biden administration of failing to effectively counter Iranian aggression, emphasizing that the mere verbal warnings were not sufficient.

"The administration keeps saying 'don't' to Iran -- but then does nothing to impose costs. This weakness means the risk from Iran continues to grow," Pompeo stated, highlighting a perceived gap between U.S. rhetoric and action.

Experts like Behnam Ben Taleblu from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies also criticize the current U.S. stance. He pointed out that Iran has been able to pursue a cost-effective strategy against U.S. forces, thanks to the relatively muted American response.

Details of the Attacks and U.S. Military's Response

Detailing the attacks, Pentagon deputy spokesperson Sabrina Singh reported that two rockets were launched at Al-Asad Airbase, with a third intercepted. These attacks have highlighted the ongoing risks to U.S. personnel stationed abroad.

A State Department spokesperson further emphasized the gravity of these assaults, describing them as a dangerous escalation and indicative of Iran's destabilizing influence in the Middle East.

In response to queries about the lack of a forceful military response, the State Department pointed to the ongoing danger posed by Katyusha rockets, which continue to target U.S. bases in the region.

Biden's Diplomatic Efforts to Deter Iran

Despite the criticisms, some defend President Biden's approach. Joel Rubin, a former State Department official, argued that the administration is actively working to deter Iran through both military deployments and diplomatic efforts.

"The president has made it very clear to Iran that there would be significant consequences if it were to take military action against Israel," Rubin said. He noted that the U.S. has increased its military presence in the region while also engaging in intense diplomatic negotiations to prevent further escalation.

Iran continues to use its oil and gas revenues to support its revolutionary Islamist ideology, maintaining its position as the foremost state sponsor of terrorism since 1984.

Continued Challenges and Future U.S. Policy

The ongoing situation presents a significant challenge to U.S. policy in the Middle East. As attacks continue, the effectiveness of the U.S. response remains a critical question.

Ben Taleblu's analysis suggests that without a significant shift in U.S. strategy, such attacks are likely to persist. "With such a lopsided response ratio, at least 172 strikes since Oct. 7 and only around 10 responses, it’s no surprise that the deterrence has worn off," he observed.

This pattern of engagement highlights the complexities of dealing with state-sponsored terrorism and the limits of current U.S. strategies in the region.

Conclusion: Evaluating U.S. Strategy in the Middle East

In conclusion, the Biden administration faces significant challenges in deterring Iranian aggression in the Middle East.

Despite clear warnings and diplomatic efforts, Tehran-backed militias continue to inflict damage on U.S. forces, raising questions about the efficacy of current U.S. foreign policy strategies.

The ongoing attacks not only endanger American personnel but also demonstrate Iran's persistent destabilizing role in the region.
