NY Congressional Candidate Candidate's Salary Funded by Soros Group

 October 5, 2024

Laura Gillen, a Democratic congressional hopeful in New York, has found herself at the center of controversy due to a strong financial link to a George Soros-backed network.

Critics have raised ethical concerns about a $40,000 payment Gillen -- a supporter of Kamala Harris -- received from the Our American Future Foundation (OAFF), which is financially tied to George Soros and his affiliates, as Fox News reports.

Gillen, who previously served as a town supervisor in Hempstead, Long Island, has been supported in her political endeavors by OAFF.

This foundation, aimed at aiding future political figures with basic living costs, granted her a $40,000 "fellow" salary in 2023. OAFF is financially backed by the Open Society Action Fund, a critical part of George Soros' network.

Fundraising and Financial Connections

The Open Society Action Fund significantly contributed over $18 million to support Our American Future Action, the main entity controlling OAFF.

This financial backing is intended to sustain activities for a duration of 19 months.

In addition to the fellowship support, Gillen's congressional campaign in 2023 benefited directly from donations made by Jonathan and Jennifer Allan Soros, while Robert Soros previously contributed to her 2022 campaign.

Furthermore, Soros' Democracy PAC also indirectly supported Gillen's candidacy by channeling $500,000 to the League of Conservation Voters Victory Fund.

Allegations and Ethical Concerns

Amid these financial revelations, Frontiers of Accountability and Corporate Accountability (FACT) took action in March, filing a complaint alleging that OAFF's financial assistance violated federal laws.

FACT argued that as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, OAFF is barred from engaging in political finance. The complaint cited concerns that the fellowship's actual motive was providing financial support to candidates during periods when they were preparing to file new campaigns.

Caitlin Sutherland, executive director of Americans for Public Trust, voiced significant concerns, indicating the perceived threat posed by George Soros' influence. "It is incredibly problematic that George Soros is paying candidates to run for office through a program disguised as a ‘fellowship’," she noted.

Responses to Allegations

Sutherland also critiqued the integrity of Gillen's platform, suggesting that the financial backing raised difficult questions about Gillen's priorities if elected. "Voters should be seriously alarmed that Laura Gillen, who is claiming to run on ethics and transparency, is being personally propped up by a Soros group...," Sutherland stated.

Gillen, on the other hand, dismissed these allegations linking Soros' support to malicious intentions. She has suggested that accusations against Soros-backed initiatives are connected to a broader theme of antisemitic violence.

Clashes Within Political Narratives

The political discourse around Soros' involvement in Democratic campaigns has also seen other Democrats lambasting such accusations. Representative Dan Goldman accused Anthony D'Esposito of perpetuating harmful stereotypes regarding Soros' support within Democratic circles.

The tensions come amidst other revelations about Soros-funded entities participating in anti-Israel protests over the past year, further intensifying discussions around the impact of Soros' contributions.

Future Developments Awaited

With several candidates, including Gillen, benefiting from the OAFF's controversial financial program, upcoming electoral outcomes are likely to be closely scrutinized. As allegations continue to surface, the debate over the legitimacy and influence of this funding mechanism remains a hot-button issue for many involved in these electoral processes.

As this story unfolds, both proponents and opponents of Soros' involvement are poised to monitor every development surrounding the candidates benefiting from this network.

The intersection of political finance, influence, and ethical considerations in Gillen's candidacy remains a subject of significant interest in the current political environment.
