Celine Dion’s family ‘praying for a miracle’ as rare disease puts legendary performer’s career on hold

 September 3, 2023

Family members of singing legend Celine Dion are holding onto hope and "praying for a miracle" as the celebrated vocalist faces an uncommon neurological ailment.

The diagnosis has led to the discontinuation of her "Courage" global tour, as the Daily Wire reported.

The Struggle with Stiff-Person Syndrome

The 55-year-old iconic singer was diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS) last December.

This debilitating condition can render those affected motionless, akin to statues, depriving them of their ability to move or communicate.

Speaking with Hello! Canada, Claudette Dion, Celine's sibling, sheds light on her sister's condition, stating, "She's doing everything to recover. She's a strong woman."

She added, "It's an illness we know so little about,"

Claudette stated the disease causes uncontrollable spasms, similar to the sudden cramps people experience in their legs at night, but it affects all muscles.

It's a heart-wrenching challenge for Celine, and Claudette lamented, "There's little we can do to support her, to alleviate her pain. "

The cover of the print version of the magazine highlighted her sister's comment that Celine's spirits remain high, evident from the tone of her voice. Another quote reads, "We pray for a miracle."

Fans and the Singer's Heartfelt Message

Claudette acknowledges the vast sea of well-wishers hoping for Dion's recovery.

"We're crossing our fingers that researchers will find a remedy for this awful illness. And she knows fans feel the same way, too.," she expressed.

She emphasized that people adore Celine not just for her remarkable voice but also for the genuine person, woman, and mother she has become. They cherish her for being her authentic self.

The revelation of her condition came after Dion, famous for her ballad "All By Myself," had to drop several concerts from her schedule last year.

Addressing her fans, the singer shared, "I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reach out to you. I miss you all so much and can't wait to be on stage talking to you in person. As you know I've always been an open book and I wasn't ready to say anything before but I'm ready now."

Detailing her medical journey, Dion revealed she has been struggling with health issues for an extended period, and confronting these challenges, as well as discussing them, has been tough for her.

She said, "Recently I've been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called the stiff-person syndrome which affects one in a million people."

The singer wrapped up her statement, acknowledging the tough decision to prioritize her well-being, thus suspending the rest of her North American tour dates.
