Charles Barkley confirms he will not finish his 10-year TV deal

 August 26, 2023

Basketball legend Charles Barkley, known for his candid remarks and in-depth basketball analyses, recently made a startling revelation about his plans with TNT's Inside the NBA.

Although he secured a 10-year contract worth $100 million with TNT last October, the 60-year-old icon clarified that he doesn't intend to work for the entire contract duration, as the Daily Mail reported.

The sports great disclosed on the SI Media Podcast with Jimmy Traina, "There's no chance in hell I'm gonna be working when I'm 70. Zero."

Further elaborating, Barkley mentioned," 'But [Turner Sports] said,' Hey, let's just make people think you're gonna hang around."

A Legendary Career: Barkley's Thoughts on its Climax

Diving deeper into his thoughts, Barkley expressed uncertainty about the timing of his departure.

He said, "The only thing that keeps me up at night is trying to figure out when's the best time to walk away. Because the one thing you don't want to do is stay too long."

Barkley expressed amazement at having been in the industry for 23 years, highlighting the lengthy duration of his career.  He candidly shared that one of his major concerns is figuring out the ideal moment to depart the limelight.

More Than Just Basketball

Barkley teamed up with names like Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson, to form the heart of TNT's critically acclaimed Inside the NBA program.

His unique style, featuring a signature Alabama twang, continues to capture the hearts of basketball enthusiasts.

Off the basketball court, Barkley is in high demand. He's caught the interest of the emerging LIV Golf tour and has also made headlines with CNN's recent announcement that he will co-host a weekly talk show with Gayle King.

Even though he seems more occupied in his 60s, the grandfather of two emphasizes the value he places on spending time with his family nowadays.

Barkley said, "Two of my mentors are Ernie Johnson and [CBS analyst] Clark Kellogg, [they] told me being a grandpa was gonna be the greatest thing in the world. And they are right."

Barkley's bond with his grandchildren, 16-month-old Henry, and 5-month-old Charlie, is palpable. His earnest desire is to be present in their growing years.

He said, "Henry's starting to walk and run, and Charlie's just still obviously a newbie, but when they're 8, 9, 10, I wanna be around them. But like I say, I won't be around when they get older."

Barkley has made significant progress on the personal health front, shedding nearly 60 pounds. He achieved this by opting for Ozempic and Mounjara, medications initially intended for diabetes but often prescribed to counter obesity.

He is optimistic that his weight loss will enable him to have more time with his grandchildren.

"Like I said, I am not even worried about death. I'm not morbid, but I want to spend time with them while I can, and that's my main motivation," Barkley expressed.
