Chicago Police Prepare for Major Protests at Democratic National Convention

 August 18, 2024

Chicago is bracing for potential unrest as it gears up to host the Democratic National Convention (DNC), with heightened security measures being implemented across the city.

The convention, at which Kamala Harris will officially be nominated as her party's candidate for president, which is expected to draw a massive crowd that will include thousands of protesters, has prompted the deployment of additional law enforcement officials and even the boarding up of some local businesses, as Breitbart reports.

As the DNC is set to kick off on Monday, Chicago's history of unrest during large events looms large. Businesses, recalling the chaos of past incidents, have begun boarding up their storefronts in anticipation of possible violence.

This precautionary measure is a direct response to the city's turbulent past, particularly the violent outbursts that occurred shortly after Chicago was announced as the 2024 convention host.

Businesses Take Precautions After Previous Unrest

In April 2023, Chicago faced several nights of violence after groups of teenagers engaged in destructive activities, including robbery, fighting, and shooting. The unrest caused significant damage, and the city has been on high alert ever since. Local businesses, particularly in downtown areas, are taking no chances this time around.

Scott Shapiro, the owner of the menswear shop Syd Jerome, decided to board up his store as a protective measure.

"We felt it was more prudent to board up since our customers and their employers have told them to stay home throughout the convention for their own safety," Shapiro explained. His concerns are shared by many in the business community, wary of the city's "poor track record when it comes to protecting businesses."

Chicago’s History of Protests Raises Concerns

The city's recent history with protests has been marked by significant turmoil. In 2020, Chicago was the site of widespread unrest during the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, which included looting and property damage.

Local BLM organizers controversially referred to the looting as "reparations," a sentiment that further complicated the city's efforts to restore order.

More recently, in December 2023, pro-Palestinian protesters attacked the homes of local lawmakers and blocked Interstate 90, disrupting access to O'Hare International Airport. This event, followed by the vandalism of Buckingham Fountain by similar groups in June 2024, has kept the city on edge as it prepares for the DNC.

Chicago Police Department’s Strategy for DNC Safety

To ensure safety during the convention, the Chicago Police Department has been preparing for large-scale protests for over a year.

Extra training and additional resources from across the state have been brought in to bolster the city's security apparatus. "Our plan is to make sure we keep everyone within the city safe. We want this to be successful," said Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.

The police presence will be noticeable throughout the city, but Snelling emphasized that no neighborhood would be left unprotected. "The Chicago Police Department will be in every single neighborhood protecting the neighborhoods so we will not deplete resources from our neighborhoods," he assured.

Chicago Officials and Business Owners Prepare for the Worst

As the DNC approaches, the mood in Chicago is one of cautious anticipation. Businesses continue to take preventive measures, hoping to avoid the kind of damage seen in previous years. The police, while prepared for the worst, are hoping for a peaceful event. However, the city's troubled history with protests leaves many on edge.

The upcoming convention will be a major test for the city, which has struggled with maintaining order during large events in the past.

Chicago's leaders, from law enforcement to business owners, are working to ensure that this year's DNC does not repeat the violence of previous gatherings.

Conclusion: Chicago’s Vigilance Ahead of the DNC

In summary, Chicago is ramping up security efforts ahead of the Democratic National Convention, anticipating a large turnout of attendees and potential unrest from protesters.

The city's history of violence during major events has led to businesses boarding up and law enforcement increasing their presence. With the memory of past protests still fresh, Chicago's police and community are preparing for all possible outcomes, aiming to keep the city safe during this high-profile event.
