Clinton Calls Criticism Of Harris A 'Double Standard'

 September 20, 2024
Hillary Clinton has defended Vice President Kamala Harris against what she describes as a gender-based double standard in the scrutiny of policy positions compared to male candidates.

Fox News reported that Clinton argued the media and public demand Harris to continuously clarify her policies due to an unfair double standard.

Clinton claimed that former President Donald Trump’s campaign receives far less consistent coverage. She stated that while Harris's policies are readily available for those interested, the scrutiny she faces stems from her gender and the public's unfamiliarity with the prospect of a female president.

Scrutiny Intensified by Gender and Media Bias

During her discussions, Clinton highlighted that higher expectations are placed on Harris partly because she is a woman. She noted this is particularly true among White women voters, whom Clinton suggests may struggle to envision a woman in presidential leadership.

Although Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, have participated in fewer interviews than Trump and his counterpart, critics overlook this discrepancy when focusing on her supposed lack of accessibility.

Notably, Harris hasn’t conducted a single press conference since Biden dropped from the race, further fueling debates on her visibility and media strategy.

Media’s Inconsistent Approach to Trump

In her critique of the media's treatment of Trump, Clinton accused the press of lacking a consistent narrative. She discussed their failure to maintain a focus on Trump’s “danger to our country,” a topic she explored at length with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

Clinton referenced Harry Evans and advocated for journalists to maintain focus on critical issues rather than getting sidetracked by transient controversies.

Two recent assassination attempts against Trump underscore the urgency of this discussion. Authorities identified the latest suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh near Trump’s golf course, which Clinton connected to harmful political rhetoric attributed to leadership figures.

Political Rhetoric Fuels Dangerous Atmosphere

Only months prior, another individual attempted an assassination during a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, highlighting the tangible threats that inflammatory political discourse creates.

Routh, involved in the recent incident, reportedly held anti-Trump sentiments influenced by current political narratives. He emphasized that “Democracy is on the ballot,” a phrase both Biden and Harris used.

Clinton's defense of Harris not only highlights the challenges female candidates face but also questions the media's role in shaping political safety and public opinion.

This ongoing discourse reflects a deep-seated need to reassess how the public portrays and scrutinizes political figures, particularly as the nation approaches major electoral decisions.
