 June 10, 2025

Conservative Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, also a potential presidential contender, has been attacked, leaving him hospitalized in critical condition.

Uribe was shot in Bogotá during a campaign event on a Saturday, and his condition remains critical as national and international figures express concern over the disturbing attack, as Breitbart reports.

On the fateful day in question, Uribe was assaulted while addressing a campaign event in Bogotá, with three gunshots fired in his direction, two striking his head and another hitting his left leg.

Alleged attacker identified as teen

The assailant, suspected to be a 14-year-old boy, reportedly sustained injuries during the chaotic incident that also affected at least two other individuals.

Following the attack, Uribe received initial medical treatment at a local facility.

However, the severity of his condition necessitated a transfer to Bogotá’s renowned Fundación Santa Fe hospital.

As reported by the hospital on Monday morning, Uribe's condition showed minimal response to treatment efforts and remains dire.

Senator's background in review

Uribe is notably a staunch critic of Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

His personal life bears a mark of tragedy, as he is the son of Diana Turbay, who died during a rescue attempt in 1991 after being kidnapped by notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Uribe's wife, María Claudia Tarazona, made a heartfelt plea for prayers, acknowledging the severity of his situation with hope for a miracle.

Local Mayor Victor Mosquera, who was present at the event, described the immediate aftermath of the attack, confirming that Uribe did not regain consciousness at any point.

National, international condemnation ensues

Petro publicly condemned the attack, pledging a thorough investigation and expressing his solidarity with Uribe's family.

He voiced concerns over the involvement of a young assailant, stressing the need to uncover who orchestrated the attack and prevent youth from being ensnared in such violence.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio weighed in, condemning the violent incident and attributing it to what he described as dangerous rhetoric within the Colombian government.

Disappearing evidence raises concerns

Investigators are troubled by the reported disappearance of the minor attacker’s cell phone, which is believed to contain significant information for the ongoing investigation.

Semana magazine cited the concerning lack of accountability for the device, as authorities strive to determine its whereabouts and secure its critical contents.

Meanwhile, as Uribe battles for life, his family, including his wife and children, remains hopeful and seeks strength from their close-knit bond amid the pervasive uncertainty.

As the world turns its eyes toward Colombia, the implications of this attack reach beyond its borders, marking yet another chapter in the nation's complex political landscape.
