A second attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump within the span of two months has intensified scrutiny over Secret Service protocols.

Now, even Democratic Party lawmakers are acknowledging the need to beef up the security presence afforded to Trump, marking a pivotal moment in this already heated campaign season, as Fox News reports.

Immediate Response and Suspect Escape

An agent quickly responded to the potential threat by firing at the gunman.

However, the assailant managed to escape in an SUV. Left at the scene were an AK-style rifle, two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera.

The quick action of the Secret Service prevented any harm to Trump or bystanders. Following the incident, authorities successfully apprehended the suspect in a neighboring county.

Calm Arrest of Suspect Raises Questions

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder commented on the suspect's demeanor during the arrest, noting his lack of questions about the situation despite the dramatic circumstances.

"[The suspect] never asked, ‘What is this about?’ Obviously, law enforcement with long rifles, blue lights, a lot going on. He never questioned it," Snyder reported.

This incident followed a previous assassination attempt on July 13 at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, underlining persistent security risks.

Political Leaders Demand Stronger Safeguards

In response to the escalating threats, Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna emphasized the urgency of enhancing protective measures around Trump, urging immediate Congressional action.

"Two assassination attempts in 60 days on a former President & the Republican nominee is unacceptable. The Secret Service must come to Congress tomorrow, tell us what resources are needed to expand the protective perimeter, & let's allocate it in a bipartisan vote the same day," Khanna stated.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also spoke out, condemning political violence and highlighting its incompatibility with democratic values.

Republican Sen. Rick Scott, who spoke directly with Trump and Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, echoed the sentiment against violent rhetoric aimed at political figures.

"God bless our law enforcement. The vile rhetoric toward Trump is dangerous and must stop," Scott expressed.

Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava similarly voiced their opposition to any form of political violence, stressing its unacceptability in society.

Former President Trump took to social media to reassure the public of his safety and resilience following the attack.

"There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down," Trump wrote.

He then emphatically added, "I will NEVER SURRENDER!"
