Demi Moore Gives Update On Bruce Willis' Dementia Battle

 September 14, 2024

Demi Moore shared an update on Bruce Willis' condition as he battles frontotemporal dementia during her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday.

Willis, the beloved actor known for his roles in films such as "Die Hard" and "Pulp Fiction," stepped away from acting in March 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, which has now progressed to frontotemporal dementia, and Moore expressed that the former star is in a stable condition and is being lovingly cared for by his family, as Fox News reports.

During the interview, Moore and Barrymore reflected on their time working together on the set of the 2003 film Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

In the movie, Bruce Willis made a cameo appearance, and the two women shared fond memories of that time. Barrymore recalled, “When we did Charlie’s Angels, Bruce came and played on it, and he opens up the film. And we got to work with him.”

Willis Diagnosed with Dementia After Aphasia

Bruce Willis, now 69, was first diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects the ability to communicate, which led him to retire from acting.

His family announced in March 2022 that he would be stepping away from his decades-long career in Hollywood due to his health challenges. However, in February 2023, Willis' condition evolved into frontotemporal dementia, a more progressive form of cognitive decline.

Since his diagnosis, the actor has been surrounded by his close-knit family, including his ex-wife Demi Moore, with whom he shares three daughters: Rumer, Scout, and Talullah. Despite their divorce in 2000, Moore and Willis have remained close, continuing to co-parent their children and celebrate significant life events together.

A Blended Family Offers Strong Support

Moore shared that she frequently visits Willis when she is in Los Angeles, taking the time to bond with him and their extended family.

“When I’m in LA, I go over every week, and I really treasure the time that we all share,” Moore said during the interview. Moore, who attended Willis' wedding to Emma Heming Willis in 2009, also took part in their vow renewal in 2019, highlighting the family's ongoing support for each other.

The family has remained united in the face of Willis' health struggles. They are known for celebrating holidays and special occasions together, even quarantining as a group during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Demi Moore Stresses Living in Present

Moore emphasized the importance of embracing who her ex-husband is in his current state. She shared her perspective on how she and her family are approaching Willis' dementia diagnosis.

“What I say to my kids is you meet them where they’re at. You don’t hold on to who they were or what you want them to be, but who they are in this moment,” Moore said. This approach, she explained, allows the family to find "beauty, joy, and sweetness" in their time together.

Rumer Willis, the eldest daughter of Moore and Willis, also provided an optimistic update on her father’s condition earlier this year. Speaking at the 24th Annual Beverly Hills Film Festival in May, she said, “He’s great. Yeah, yeah, doing OK. Thank you so much for asking.”

Public Support Offers Comfort to Family

Rumer also shared how the outpouring of love and support from fans has been a source of comfort for the family. She expressed gratitude for the way her father is beloved by so many, acknowledging that sharing their experience has brought hope to others. “I think, for me, through this experience, what’s been so incredible is my dad is so beloved, and that’s been so evident in the transparency with which we’ve been sharing,” Rumer said.

She added that the family’s openness about Willis’ condition might serve as a source of hope for other families going through similar challenges. “If there’s any way sharing our experience brings hope — whatever comes forward as a family — that can have an effect and bring any sort of hope, comfort to someone else experiencing that, then to me, that’s … everything.”

Willis Family Remains Strong Amid Health Struggles

As Bruce Willis continues his battle with dementia, the strength and unity of his blended family have become even more evident. Moore, Willis, and Emma Heming Willis have created an environment of love and care around the actor, focusing on his well-being and spending quality time together.

Moore's appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show offered a rare insight into how the family is navigating this difficult time. Through weekly visits, special family gatherings, and ongoing support, the family remains committed to standing by Willis as he faces his diagnosis.

In conclusion, as Bruce Willis’ family continues to rally around him, they find joy in living in the moment, drawing strength from their close bond. Demi Moore's latest update reflects a family united in love, even as they face the challenges of dementia together.
