Democrat Sen. John Fetterman Applauds Some Trump Cabinet Selections

 November 15, 2024

Following the recent presidential election, President-elect Donald Trump has made several key cabinet appointments, among them, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has been nominated to become secretary of State and New York Rep. Elise Stefanik to take the role of ambassador to the United Nations.

Democrat Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has expressed his approval of these nominations, highlighting Rubio and Stefanik as highly qualified for their respective roles, as the Daily Caller reports.

He noted that despite their political differences, Rubio's strong background makes him a solid choice for secretary of State.

Controversy Surrounds AG Appointment

However, Fetterman's reaction was not uniformly positive across all appointments.

He voiced significant opposition to the nomination of now-former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general, a decision announced by the Trump-Vance transition team one Wednesday afternoon.

Soon after the announcement, Gaetz resigned "effective immediately" from Congress, stirring more controversy. Fetterman did not mince words, labeling Gaetz as a "jerkoff" and describing his appointment as a provocative act meant to incite outrage.

The senator suggested that Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt would have been a preferable choice for the role of attorney general, pointing to what he said was a missed opportunity for a more suitable nomination.

Support for Rubio and International Diplomacy

Fetterman has announced his intention to support Rubio during the upcoming confirmation hearings.

His endorsement comes despite the senator's honest view of Trump’s level of support in Pennsylvania, which he described as "astonishing" and "something very special."

In addition to his Cabinet-related comments, Fetterman has been active in international relations, particularly with regard to Israel.

He met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in June, despite some opposition from within his own party.

Fetterman’s stance on Israel is clear. He criticized the Democratic Party's approach to Israel, particularly their focus on Netanyahu during debates on how to handle the war in Gaza.

Fetterman's Broader Political Views

Fetterman's criticism extended to his own party's progressives, individuals he felt were inadvertently supporting Trump by opposing President Joe Biden's Gaza policy.

This, he argued, was essentially a form of de facto support for the former -- and now future -- president's strategies.

These complex positions underscore Fetterman's nuanced approach to politics where bipartisan agreement is possible but not at the expense of core values.

His comments reflect a willingness to cross party lines when necessary while firmly holding his ground on key issues.

As these political dynamics unfold, Fetterman remains a key figure to watch.

His votes and voices in the Senate will undoubtedly influence the forthcoming legislative session, particularly as it relates to foreign policy and judicial appointments.
