Democratic mayor accused of launching raids on businesses that fail to pay her ‘ransom’

 February 25, 2024

In Dolton, Illinois, Mayor Tiffany Henyard, a Democrat, finds herself at the center of controversy following accusations of utilizing local police forces to intimidate businesses into compliance with her demands.

These allegations gained traction shortly after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) initiated an inquiry into Henyard's activities, as Fox News reported.

Reports from Fox 32 reveal that six individuals, comprising business owners, a former village employee, and public officials, have voiced their concerns to the FBI, detailing incidents of harassment, unwarranted raids, and license renewal issues purportedly as retribution for not contributing to events endorsed by Henyard.

Business Raids Raise Eyebrows

The situation escalated when several bars in Dolton were unexpectedly raided by police, occurring just hours after a Fox 32 news team conducted interviews with the affected establishments.

The raids are believed to be connected to allegations of delays in the processing of business licenses for political reasons.

Tammie Brown, a Dolton trustee, insinuated to Fox 32 that these raids served as a warning to others, implying that non-cooperation with donation solicitations could lead to operational shutdowns.

"I'm sure that they were asked to donate, make a donation, and most likely they didn't make a donation. So, you don't get a chance to stay open if you don't pay the queen's ransom," Brown stated.

Sevone Garfield and George Mseeh, affiliated with Pablo's Cafe and Bar, depicted the raids as excessive, likening the police presence to that which might descend on a drug house raid despite the absence of any criminal activity.

These actions have been described as part of a broader pattern of harassment that is adversely affecting local businesses, leading to job losses and financial strain.

Official Response and Security Concerns

The Village of Dolton has publicly defended the legitimacy of the police actions, citing previous hearings and license revocations due to a history of disturbances at the businesses in question.

However, concerns have been raised about Henyard's apparent misuse of police resources for personal security and errands, highlighted by accounts from Brittney Norwood, a village trustee, and Robert Collins, a former Dolton Police Chief.

Norwood criticized the allocation of significant funds towards the mayor's security detail, suggesting it detracts from the police's primary role of community protection.

He said, "I think that she spends the money on security because she just loves it. She likes the thought of being surrounded by police officers. I think it makes her feel more important."

Collins echoed this sentiment, lamenting the redirection of law enforcement officers from their essential duties.

Henyard, who has been criticized for her lavish lifestyle and purported self-aggrandizement, remains a contentious figure.

Despite a substantial salary and allegations of extravagant spending, her actions have sparked debate within the community, especially following a public outburst where she emphasized her leadership role while accusing her critics of undermining her authority.

The mayor's conduct, including a notable interaction with President Joe Biden, remains under scrutiny as local and federal investigations continue.
