DeSantis says shooting in Jacksonville, Florida was racially motivated, says ‘scumbag’ shooter ‘took the coward’s way out’

 August 27, 2023

A racially motivated shooting in Jacksonville, Florida, left several dead, including the shooter, who took his own life after the attack.

The tragic incident involved a white male in his early 20s targeting and killing at least three people at a Dollar General store before taking his own life.

Local officials have labeled the incident as a "racially motivated" hate crime. The assailant specifically targeted black individuals during the attack, according to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters, as reported by the Daily Wire.

Shooter's manifesto reveals racial motive

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke with Sheriff Waters about the horrific event.

DeSantis revealed that the shooting was racially motivated, based on a manifesto discovered that was penned by the shooter.

The suspect had reportedly written several manifestos, sending one to his parents and another to the media.

DeSantis noted:

This shooting, based on the manifesto that they’ve discovered from the scumbag that did this, was racially motivated.

DeSantis condemns act

DeSantis expressed his outrage at the incident, stating that targeting people based on their race is totally unacceptable.

He criticized the shooter for taking his own life rather than facing the consequences of his actions. The governor noted:

He was targeting people based on their race — that is totally unacceptable. This guy killed himself rather than face the music and accept responsibility for his actions.

The governor also expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, condemning the act as a cowardly one.

He assured that support has been offered to Sheriff Waters and the city of Jacksonville. DeSantis said:

He took the coward’s way out. We condemn what happened in the strongest possible terms. We’ve offered support for Sheriff Waters in the city of Jacksonville, and we send our condolences to the victims and their families who were the victims of a very cowardly act.

This event in Jacksonville is reminiscent of a shooting in Buffalo last year in which a shooter killed 10 Black individuals, and it occurred half a decade after a separate shooter attacked during a video game tournament in Jacksonville, resulting in two fatalities before the assailant turned the gun on himself.

Community in mourning

The Jacksonville community is in mourning after the tragic incident. Local officials and community leaders are calling for unity and support for the affected families.

There is also a call for a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure that all aspects of the crime are uncovered and addressed.

As the investigation continues, there is a growing demand for action to address the underlying issues that may have contributed to this tragic event.

Community leaders are calling for a comprehensive approach to address racial tensions and promote a more inclusive society.
