Discontent grows among PA Dems amid concerns over Fetterman's political direction

 May 13, 2025

At a recent town hall in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona received criticism for failing to address recent controversies surrounding Sen. John Fetterman, and the event highlighted the growing displeasure among Pennsylvania Democrats with Fetterman's shifting political views and perceived health issues.

Attendees at the town hall expressed their growing dissatisfaction with the Pennsylvania senator, fueling talk about a possible challenge to his position, as the Daily Caller reports.

The town hall, held on a Saturday, was an opportunity for constituents to voice their concerns directly to Gallego. Many attendees anticipated a discussion about Fetterman but were left disheartened when Gallego skirted the subject.

Several expressed disapproval of Fetterman's departure from his earlier progressive image to a more centrist role, as well as his recent legislative decisions.

Concerns surround Fetterman's health

Fetterman's health has been a topic of concern following a New York Magazine article from May 2, which suggested he is struggling both mentally and physically.

Traditionally a progressive stronghold, western Pennsylvania Democrats, as noted in a February Pittsburgh poll, are also echoing this sentiment.

Attendees criticized Fetterman's transformation from a symbol of progressive change, characterized by his former campaign imagery, to someone they now struggle to support.

Among the complaints was Fetterman's January visit to former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, which some contrasted with Gallego's meeting with entrepreneur Marc Andreessen.

Frustration over political stances emerges

In the town hall, a voter reminisced about Fetterman's past activism, particularly his support for social and economic justice.

“Now it's like that flag's been replaced by one of Trump's," a voter lamented, illustrating the stark shift they feel has occurred. Another attendee speculated that Fetterman should prepare for a primary challenge in response to these alleged changes, though was uncertain of who his opponent might be.

Fetterman's decision not to participate in a government shutdown push in March as a form of protest against the Trump administration's policies angered some attendees. Discontent grew when it was revealed that ten Democrats, led by Sen. Chuck Schumer, including Fetterman, voted against the shutdown.

Despite their frustrations, some attendees were sympathetic to Fetterman's struggles with health, notably following a stroke in 2022 during his Senate campaign and treatments for depression in 2023.

His mental fitness came under particular scrutiny, with reports quoting anonymous Democratic Party senators voicing their unease about his well-being.

Public sentiment vs. Fetterman's track record

During separate discussions, Gallego expressed support for keeping Fetterman within the Democratic Party, emphasizing the need for diverse viewpoints. Gallego highlighted that although they do not always align, Fetterman fights for working-class people. This acknowledgement of Fetterman's past was a rare moment of defense against his critics.

Questions around party loyalty were also raised regarding Fetterman's recent legislative decisions, such as his support for the confirmation of Pam Bondi as attorney general and his co-sponsorship of a bipartisan immigration bill, the Laken Riley Act.

Some concerns turned to speculation about potential party shifts, driven by suggestions that Republicans are attempting to persuade Fetterman to join their ranks. Gallego dismissed these efforts with colorful language that underscored his dismissive attitude towards political gamesmanship.

Emerging concerns mount

In an attempt to quell the speculations, Gallego reassured his audience that there must be room within the Democratic Party caucus for diverse opinions, including Fetterman's.

Nevertheless, attendees left the town hall without clear answers, remaining uncertain about Fetterman's future in the Democratic Party and whether he will face a significant primary challenge.
