Donald Trump Celebrates Perfect Record in GOP Primaries After Unconventional Endorsement Strategy

 August 8, 2024

Donald Trump marked a milestone on Tuesday night as he celebrated his unprecedented success in endorsing multiple candidates across several high-stakes Republican primaries in Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, and Washington. The former president's favored candidates triumphed in these crucial races, showcasing his enduring influence within the GOP.

Trump's unconventional approach of endorsing multiple candidates for the same position paid off significantly in Tuesday’s primaries, Daily Mail reported.

In Missouri, both the attorney general race and the gubernatorial primary saw Trump-endorsed candidates secure victories, while the Washington State race's results are still pending.

Trump's Strategy in Missouri Races

In the Missouri attorney general race, incumbent Andrew Bailey successfully defended his seat against a formidable challenge from Trump attorney Will Scharf.

Trump had taken the unusual step of endorsing both Bailey and Scharf, a move that ultimately ensured a victory for his preferred candidate regardless of the outcome. With 95 percent of the votes counted, Bailey led Scharf 63 to 37 percent.

Bailey, who was appointed in 2022 following Eric Schmitt's departure from the Senate, celebrated his victory on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

"This victory is for the hardworking Missourians who have fought tirelessly alongside me over the past 18 months," Bailey stated. "Your dedication and passion have been the driving force behind this incredible triumph. Together, we WILL keep Missouri strong, safe, and free."

Significant Endorsements and Election Expenses

The Bailey-Scharf race emerged as one of the most expensive down-ballot contests, with nearly $20 million spent. Despite the substantial grassroots support for his campaign, Scharf conceded the race and threw his support behind Bailey.

"Tonight we came up short. We always knew that challenging an incumbent and the Jefferson City establishment would be difficult, and despite the tremendous grassroots energy around our campaign Andrew Bailey has certainly earned a full term in office," Scharf acknowledged. "He has my unqualified support in the general election, and I hope that he will do Missouri proud in the coming years."

Trump expressed his admiration for both candidates on Truth Social, calling Bailey and Scharf "truly outstanding in every way, shape, and form." He emphasized his confidence in both men, stating, "NEITHER ONE WILL EVER LET YOU DOWN!"

Contentious Missouri Attorney General Race

The Missouri attorney general race was marked by intense advertising and scrutiny, particularly targeting Bailey’s record on crime. Pro-Scharf political action committees (PACs) launched numerous ads and mailers criticizing Bailey’s handling of cases involving Kenneth Simpson, a criminal with a long history who was involved in the killing of police officer Mason Griffith. These ads accused Bailey of being too lenient in sentencing Simpson, which allegedly allowed him to commit further crimes.

Jennifer Griffith, the widow of Mason Griffith, shared the emotional toll these ads took on her family. "They're hitting this pretty hard," she said, mentioning that she received numerous mail ads, phone calls, and texts with videos exploiting her husband's death. "I have to explain to my son every time he sees a commercial on TV why Kenneth Simpson's face is on TV."

Bailey’s team responded by accusing the pro-Scharf PAC of exploiting a tragedy for political gain. They highlighted efforts by Bailey’s successor in Warren County to revoke Simpson’s bail, which the courts denied. Scharf, adhering to campaign regulations, was prohibited from coordinating with PACs like Defend Missouri on campaign strategies.

Gubernatorial and Congressional Races

In the Missouri gubernatorial primary, Trump-endorsed Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe emerged victorious, securing his spot as the Republican nominee for governor. Kehoe's win further solidified Trump’s influence within Missouri's GOP ranks.

Meanwhile, in Washington State, Trump aimed to unseat Republican Rep. Dan Newhouse, who had voted to impeach Trump. The results of Newhouse's race are unknown, leaving the final outcome of Trump’s endorsement efforts in the state still up in the air.

Conclusion of Primary Night Victories

Trump’s strategy of endorsing multiple candidates has proven to be a notable success, with his favored candidates clinching victories in several key races. From the high-stakes Missouri attorney general race to the gubernatorial primary and the pending results in Washington State, Trump’s influence remains a powerful force in GOP primaries.

As the primary season progresses, the impact of Trump’s endorsements will continue to shape the political landscape, reinforcing his role as a kingmaker within the Republican Party.
