Trump Fires Back At Harris Ad Linking Him To IVF Bans, Says He's A Longtime Supporter

 September 28, 2024

Former President Donald Trump has sharply criticized an ad from Vice President Kamala Harris, which he claims misrepresents his position on in vitro fertilization (IVF). In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump accused Harris of falsely blaming him for the banning of IVF in certain areas, while insisting that he has always been a proponent of access to the procedure.

Trump pushed back against the ad, calling it misleading and claiming that both he and the Republican Party have been consistent supporters of IVF, Just the News reported.

The ad in question from the Harris campaign cited policies and rulings in several states, suggesting that Trump-era policies have led to restrictions on IVF services. The vice president, along with the Democratic Party, has frequently pointed to recent legal uncertainties around IVF, particularly following a ruling in Alabama earlier this year.

Trump Responds To Harris’s Claims About IVF

Trump's public response came quickly after the ad began circulating. "Comrade Kamala Harris just put up an Ad saying that I.V.F. was banned in certain areas because of me," Trump posted on Truth Social, referring to the Harris campaign's claims. He went on to call the statement a "LIE," echoing his frequent criticisms of Democratic leadership. Trump also compared the alleged misinformation in the ad to past claims he has accused Harris of making, such as her time working at McDonald's, which he also labeled as false.

Harris's ad referenced a court ruling in Alabama that caused confusion regarding the legality of IVF procedures within the state. The ruling, which came earlier this year, sparked concern that IVF might face restrictions in light of ongoing debates about reproductive rights. In response to the ruling, the Alabama state legislature moved swiftly to pass a law that ensured continued protection for IVF providers and patients.

Trump has claimed that his influence in Alabama was part of the reason the state legislature acted quickly to safeguard IVF access. He emphasized that the overwhelming majority of Americans are in favor of maintaining the availability of IVF and criticized Harris for trying to politicize the issue.

Legal Uncertainty Surrounding IVF After Court Rulings

While Alabama eventually protected IVF services, the case has brought attention to the broader debate surrounding reproductive healthcare. Many Democrats have argued that rulings affecting abortion rights, particularly since the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, could have a ripple effect on other reproductive services, such as IVF. Harris and other Democratic leaders have made the case that Republican-backed policies and legal decisions could jeopardize the availability of IVF in the future.

Several religious organizations, including the Roman Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Convention, have historically opposed IVF on moral and ethical grounds. Despite these positions from conservative religious groups, Trump has maintained that he does not support any efforts to ban IVF, distancing himself from those who oppose the procedure.

Trump was adamant in his defense of his record on the issue, writing, "I have been totally supportive of I.V.F., right from the beginning, and so has the Republican Party!" His comments suggest that he sees the issue as a critical point in the ongoing political battle with Harris and her campaign.

IVF Becomes A Political Issue Amid Reproductive Rights Debate

Harris’s ad comes at a time when both candidates are vying for voters’ attention on issues surrounding reproductive rights. With the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2022, which allowed states to set their own abortion laws, IVF and related reproductive procedures have become a key focus in some states where lawmakers have taken different stances on the issue.

In the wake of the Alabama ruling, state legislatures across the country are considering how to balance the protection of reproductive services, including IVF, with the newly empowered role of states in regulating such procedures. Harris’s campaign has worked to highlight the risks they say these rulings present, particularly in states with strong conservative leadership.

Trump’s vocal defense of IVF access is likely aimed at reassuring his supporters and independents that he supports reproductive options for families. His insistence that both he and the Republican Party have been "totally supportive" of IVF also comes as the 2024 election approaches, with voters paying close attention to candidates’ stances on healthcare.

Future Campaigns May Revisit The Issue Of IVF

As the debate around IVF continues, both candidates will likely address the topic again in future campaign appearances. Harris’s ad underscores the importance of reproductive health in the upcoming election, while Trump’s quick rebuttal shows that he is eager to counter any claims that he has been anything but supportive of IVF.

With reproductive rights remaining a central issue in U.S. politics, both Harris and Trump will continue to battle for public support on where they stand on procedures like IVF, framing the issue within the broader context of their differing political ideologies.
