Ex-GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman Mulls Over Independent Statewide Run in Virginia

 January 2, 2025

Dramatic political shifts are stirring in the state of Virginia as a former Republican representative from the region is stepping out of partisan lines.

Denver Riggleman, previously a Republican Congressman from Virginia, has announced the inception of an exploratory committee to ponder on his potential run as an independent candidate for statewide office, The Hill reported.

An interview with Bloomberg TV featured Riggleman revealing this strategic move. Riggleman stressed his commitment to truthful leadership that transcends party boundaries, driving the creation of his exploratory committee.

Riggleman Considers Lieutenant Governor Seat

Highlighting the uncertainty of his political trajectory, Riggleman has left open the possible pursuit of the Lieutenant Governor's position. However, he clarified that limitations towards running for governor derive from potential conflicts of interest.

Unlike most states, Virginia sees separate elections for their gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial candidates.

Riggleman, a familiar face in the political arena of Virginia, served the 5th Congressional District as a representative after securing a victory in 2018. His tenure was cut short when Rep. Bob Good replaced him in a GOP convention.

Riggleman's Opposition to the Two-party System

Riggleman, known for his distinctive political views, surprised many by openly criticizing President-elect Trump and endorsing Vice President Harris in the 2024 Presidential election. This endorsement came through an initiative named Republicans for Harris.

Complementing his diverse political stance, Riggleman parted ways with Trump in January 2021, despite previous endorsements. This move portrayed his fearless departure from party lines.

Riggleman's critique of the two-party system stands strong. He pointed to the influence of special interests as a troubling factor within this system.

Virginia's Emerging Political Landscape

As the off-year elections loom on the horizon in November, Virginia's political landscape is becoming a focal point. Slated for broad changes, the region is attracting significant attention.

Possible Republican and Democratic frontrunners include Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Rep. Abigail Spanberger respectively. Meanwhile, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and John Curran, among others, have also jumped into the race for the Lieutenant Governor's seat.

While being a decided heavyweight, Riggleman's decision to consider crossing party lines further stirs Virginia's political scene.

Riggleman Sets Vision With Exploratory Committee

Addressing his potential candidacy, Riggleman told Bloomberg TV, "That’s why we started an exploratory committee because I think there needs to be somebody who’s willing to drag the axe and tell the truth regardless if there’s an R or D behind people’s names.”

His sentiment towards independent political thought came as a fresh perspective. He further expressed, "There’s a lot of people who’ve asked me, they don’t have to force me. Nobody’s going to force me to do anything. But it was interesting to see the amount of support I had just for an exploratory committee.”

Voicing a critical opinion on the two-party system, Riggleman highlighted his concerns stating, "the things he saw on either side of the aisle frighten him based on special interests."

A New Era In Virginia Politics?

While his candid style and independent stance are not conventional, Denver Riggleman's political approach potentially augurs a new era in Virginian politics. He stands at the precipice of a decision that could veer the dialogue towards a non-partisan narrative.

Regardless of his final decision, Riggleman has already set the wheels in motion for a thought-provoking electoral season in Virginia. Only time will tell how this shift will transfigure the political landscape and what role Riggleman will play in it.

Given his trajectory, the former GOP congressman's movement is worth watching for what it heralds for Virginia's political future.
