Poll Finds Majority Blame Harris for Biden's Policies, Approval Plummets

 July 28, 2024

Despite the recent hype and excitement surrounding Kamala Harris' burgeoning presidential campaign, there may be rough waters ahead for the presumptive Democratic Party nominee.

A recent poll conducted by the Senate Opportunity Fund reveals that a significant majority of Americans blame Vice President Kamala Harris for the unpopular policies of outgoing President Joe Biden, as Breitbart reports.

The data also shows that many view Harris and Biden as indistinguishable in their policy records. This polling data indicates major challenges for Democrats, who were hoping Harris would revitalize their party's prospects in the 2024 election.

Poll Highlights Voter Sentiments and Key Issues

From July 22 to July 24, the Senate Opportunity Fund surveyed 800 likely voters nationally, with a sample size of 511 in contested states. The poll has a margin of error of 3.5% nationally and 4.3% in contested states. Notably, 68% of respondents agreed that "Kamala Harris’ record is the Biden Administration’s record over the last 4 years." Additionally, 66% concurred that "in terms of policy, Kamala Harris is no different than Joe Biden."

The poll highlights majorities across all political demographics agreeing on the similarity between Harris and Biden's policy records. Key issues identified by respondents for the 2024 election include inflation, the economy & jobs, immigration, national security, and crime & drugs.

Harris Faces Unfavorable Ratings

Vice President Harris’s approval rating was reported as 51% unfavorable, with 39% viewing her very unfavorably and 11% somewhat unfavorably, while 43% had a favorable opinion.

This marks a decline from July 19, when Harris had a 47% favorable rating and 50% unfavorable rating. The drop in favorability occurred within just a few days, highlighting growing discontent among voters.

Biden's Exit Viewed with Mixed Reactions

Regarding President Biden’s decision to not seek re-election, 53% of respondents perceived it as a political move, while 38% saw it as patriotic.

This split in perception reflects the ongoing debate over Biden's legacy and the direction of the Democratic Party.

Debate Over Democratic Nomination Process

The poll also revealed differing opinions on the Democratic nomination process. Fully 48% of respondents favored an "open process" for the nomination, compared to 41% who believed Harris should be the nominee. Among liberal-leaning voters, 68% supported Harris's nomination, while moderates were evenly divided, with 45% on each side.

In contested states, the preference for an open process was more pronounced, with 49% supporting it and 40% favoring Harris.

Public Perception of Harris

The top five words used to describe Harris were "unqualified" (42%), "unprepared" (38%), "qualified" (31%), "weak" (31%), and "liberal" (30%). These descriptors indicate a polarized view of the Vice President, with significant portions of the electorate questioning her readiness and capability.

Twenty-six percent of respondents associated Harris most with border and immigration issues, reflecting a key area of concern for voters.

Party Unity and Election Prospects

The poll showed a stark contrast in perceived party unity. An impressive 74% of respondents believed Republicans were unified, compared to 51% who thought Democrats were unified. This perception could play a crucial role in the upcoming election, influencing voter confidence in each party's ability to govern effectively.

In a head-to-head matchup, 44% of respondents thought former President Donald Trump would unify the country better than Harris, who garnered 43% support. In swing states, Trump led with 47%, while Harris had 44%.

Conclusion

The recent poll by the Senate Opportunity Fund underscores the significant challenges facing Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party as they approach the 2024 election.

With majorities viewing Harris and Biden's policy records as indistinguishable and Harris's favorability declining, the Democrats face a tough road ahead. Key issues such as inflation, the economy, immigration, and national security will be pivotal in shaping voter opinions.

The debate over the Democratic nomination process and perceptions of party unity further complicate the political landscape, highlighting the critical need for strategic decisions in the coming months.
