FBI Agents Search Long Island House Linked to Former Hochul Staffer

 July 25, 2024

The FBI conducted a search of a Nassau County home early Tuesday morning linked to Linda Sun, a former deputy chief of staff to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The nature of the investigation and the search of the residence remains unclear, and no criminal charges have been filed against its owner or the Biden ally for whom she once worked, as NBC New York reports.

Federal officers were observed around the property located in Manhasset.

According to property records, Sun and her husband, Chris Hu, own the $3.5 million home situated in the gated community of Stone Hill. The couple purchased the house in 2021 and placed it in a trust earlier this year.

Former Hochul Staffer and Investigative Context

Sun, who left the governor’s office almost two years ago, has a long career in state government. She was appointed as deputy chief of staff to Governor Hochul in September 2021, and at the time, she was the highest-ranking Asian-American in the administration.

Before working with Governor Hochul, Sun held various significant positions. These included serving as the chief of staff for a state lawmaker, occupying multiple posts in former Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration, and serving as the deputy superintendent for Intergovernmental Affairs & chief diversity officer at the NYS Department of Financial Services.

Chronological Career Path and Misconduct Allegation

Sun's other roles included being the deputy chief diversity officer and director of Asian American Affairs for the NYS Executive Chamber, director of external affairs for Global NY at Empire State Development, and chief of staff to NYS Assemblymember Grace Meng.

In November 2022, Sun transitioned to a new role at the New York Department of Labor as the deputy commissioner for strategic business development. However, her tenure was short-lived as she left the job in March 2023.

Investigations and Law Enforcement Forwarded Matter

Individuals familiar with the circumstances surrounding her departure revealed that Sun was dismissed after evidence of misconduct was uncovered.

This information was forwarded to law enforcement for further action. The person who provided this data to the Associated Press requested anonymity due to not being authorized to discuss personnel matters publicly.

Following her departure from state government positions, Sun managed Democrat Austin Cheng's congressional campaign on Long Island. Despite their efforts, the campaign was unsuccessful.

Details Around the FBI Search and Community Reaction

Sun and Hu’s home, which was the focus of the FBI's search, lies in a prominent and affluent neighborhood. The sight of federal officers in such a serene and well-protected community of Stone Hill caused a significant stir among residents.

Efforts to get comments from Sun were not fruitful, but her husband, reached by phone on Tuesday, chose not to provide any insights regarding the ongoing investigation. Gov. Hochul’s office, as well as a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, also declined to comment on the matter.

Personal and Professional Background of Linda Sun

Sun boasts almost 15 years of experience in state government and has held positions that focused on diversity and state-level intergovernmental affairs. Her career trajectory portrayed a commitment to public service and diversity advocacy, making her a notable figure in the New York state administration.

Throughout her service, she was instrumental in various initiatives and held a reputation for her work in policy development and governmental affairs. The investigation and subsequent FBI search are thus particularly notable against the backdrop of her history and contributions.

As of now, the precise details of the investigation remain undisclosed to the public. It remains to be seen how this development will impact Linda Sun and her professional legacy. The absence of criminal charges adds an air of uncertainty and speculation among those following the story.

Conclusion and Moving Forward

In summary, the FBI's search of Linda Sun’s residence, her substantial career in state government, the ambiguity surrounding the investigation, and her reported dismissal due to alleged misconduct forms a complex narrative.

The Long Island community and beyond now await further developments in this unfolding story.
