Federal Court Halts Biden's Plan To Extend Obamacare To DACA Recipients
A federal judge has recently issued a temporary block against President Joe Biden's initiative to broaden Affordable Care Act coverage to include DACA recipients.
According to Breitbart, A preliminary injunction has been set by District Judge Daniel Traynor, putting a pause on extending Obamacare benefits to DACA participants.
In May, the Biden-Harris administration finalized a rule aiming to provide Affordable Care Act benefits to certain individuals under the DACA program. This program was initially created by an executive order from former President Barack Obama, which primarily aims to shield many undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Legal Challenge Prompted by State Coalition
However, the administration's move was quickly challenged in court. A coalition of seventeen states, spearheaded by Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach and including states like Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas, filed a lawsuit contesting the policy's expansion.
The legal action argues that the extension of health benefits to DACA recipients violates existing federal laws that restrict such benefits to lawful residents and citizens.
The case was brought before the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota, where Judge Traynor's decision to issue the injunction reflects an alignment with these statutory limitations.
Implications of the Court's Decision
The court's decision is pivotal as it temporarily prevents the Biden administration from implementing a policy that would potentially add an estimated 100,000 DACA recipients to the Obamacare rolls, which could cost American taxpayers between $300 million to $2.8 billion annually.
This financial impact, noted in court documents, highlights the significant economic stakes involved in the policy's potential implementation.
Legal experts note that the decision underscores the ongoing debate over the scope of executive power in immigration policy and its intersection with healthcare law.
Critiques and Support for the Ruling
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach responded to the ruling with approval, stating, "This decision is a big win for the rule of law. Congress never intended that illegal aliens should receive Obamacare benefits. Indeed, two laws prohibit them from receiving such benefits. The Biden administration tried to break those laws. But we fought back and defeated the Biden Justice Department."
Similarly, Dale Wilcox, Executive Director of the legal advocacy group involved in the lawsuit, criticized the Biden administration's effort to expand Obamacare as a disregard for legal boundaries: "This expansion of Obamacare to illegal aliens once again shows the Biden Administration’s contempt for the law. Like DACA itself, this expansion is a usurpation of power by an executive that opposes the will of the people as expressed in duly enacted laws, and arrogantly purports to rewrite the law itself."
Wilcox further praised the court's ability to recognize the unlawful nature of the policy extension and its decision to halt its implementation.
Historical Context of Healthcare and Immigration
During his 2012 State of the Union Address, Barack Obama assured that illegal aliens would not be eligible for Obamacare benefits, a statement that became a point of contention highlighted by Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-SC) interruption, exclaiming, “You lie!” This historical moment echoes in the current debates surrounding the boundaries of healthcare benefits for undocumented immigrants.
The ongoing legal battle is set to continue as the case progresses through the courts. The injunction remains in place, maintaining the status quo until a final decision is reached.
Observers note that with President-elect Donald Trump's impending inauguration, there may be further shifts in policy that could override the current administration's attempts to expand healthcare coverage to DACA recipients.
