Fetterman Highlights Trump's Enduring Impact in PA After Assassination Attempt

 September 22, 2024

In a recent discourse at the 2024 Atlantic Festival, Democrat Sen. John Fetterman delved into former President Donald Trump's persistent and powerful influence in Pennsylvania, a state that continues to rally behind him even after a harrowing assassination attempt.

In Pennsylvania, Trump's political sway has only intensified following the attempt on his life, stirring skepticism about Vice President Kamala Harris's reportedly narrow lead in the polls, according to Fetterman, as Fox News reports.

During a conversation with Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Fetterman reflected on the former president's enduring connection with Pennsylvanians. He observed that Trump's rapport with the state deepened significantly after he survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.

Trump was wounded during the event by a deranged gunman but survived the ordeal, an incident that Fetterman believes has only strengthened his support base in the state. The senator humorously noted that Trump signs in Pennsylvania are so prevalent they might as well be considered the state's flower.

Fetterman also pointed to recent polls that show Vice President Harris holding a slight lead over Trump in Pennsylvania. Despite her position at the top, Fetterman remains skeptical of her advantage.

Trusting Polls? A Skeptical View from 2016

Recalling the 2016 presidential election, Fetterman highlighted the unpredictability of polling. He noted that despite Hillary Clinton’s lead in the polls, she unexpectedly lost Pennsylvania -- a critical swing state. The senator expressed concern that current polling might not accurately capture the voter sentiment on the ground.

A recent Washington Post poll places Harris at 48% among likely and registered voters, narrowly ahead of Trump’s 47%. Another poll by the New York Times shows Harris with a slightly wider margin, leading Trump 50% to 46%.

Fetterman argued that these numbers might be misleading. "Everybody thought that it was in the bag, but that’s not the energy and the other kinds of things that were really consistent with what I’m witnessing all across," he said, highlighting a disconnect between public sentiment and polling data.

Assessing the Real Sentiment in Pennsylvania

Fetterman’s commentary sheds light on the complex and often charged political landscape in Pennsylvania. He described an environment of strong commitment and anger among Trump supporters, which could influence the upcoming election’s outcome.

"Trump has created a special kind of hold within the coronet he’s remade -- the party -- and he has a special kind of place in Pennsylvania, and I think that only deepened after the first assassination attempt," Fetterman explained.

His remarks suggest a deep-seated loyalty to Trump among his supporters, one that seems to grow stronger in the face of adversity.

"And I joked that his signs became like the state flower -- and you see that everywhere," Fetterman added, using humor to emphasize the ubiquity of Trump's presence in the state.

Fetterman's Insight on Trump's Political Resilience

Fetterman also touched on the personal dimensions of Trump’s appeal. "People understand who he is and what he’s about, and enough people think that that’s the feature, and it’s not a bug," he stated, suggesting that Trump’s straightforwardness might be a key aspect of his appeal to Pennsylvanian voters.

"I also want people to understand, you know, and it’s not science, but there is, there’s energy and there are kinds of anger on the ground in Pennsylvania -- and people are very committed and strong," he elaborated on the sentiments fueling Trump's support.

The senator's remarks provide a crucial perspective on the ongoing political dynamics in Pennsylvania as the nation heads closer to the election, hinting at a possibly contentious and unpredictable race.

Looking Ahead: Pennsylvania's Role in the 2024 Presidential Election

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Pennsylvania remains a critical battleground. Fetterman’s insights are especially significant as they highlight the deep political currents that may sway the outcome in this pivotal state.

The senator’s observations suggest that Trump’s influence in Pennsylvania may have been underestimated by mainstream narratives. With the election on the horizon, all eyes are on this key state as it may once again play a decisive role in shaping the nation’s political future.

"And then, sadly, we saw what happened," Fetterman concluded, a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of politics and the importance of each vote in the forthcoming election.
