Florida Legislators Change Affiliation to GOP as Trump Applauds Move
In a startling announcement made earlier this month, President-elect Donald Trump publicly recognized the recent change of political allegiance by two Florida state representatives.
Reps. Hillary Cassel and Susan Valdés transitioned from being Democrats to Republicans, reinforcing the dominant presence of the GOP in the Florida State Legislature, as The Hill reports.
Cassel, who is the second former state House Democrat to change affiliation to Republican within the month, received significant acknowledgment from Trump.
The president-elect was quick to voice his support, offering warm congratulations and a welcome to Cassel for her switch to the GOP. This event transpired shortly after the transition of another Democrat representative, Susan Valdés.
Cassel Cites Democrats' Stance on Israel
Among the reasons that influenced Cassel's decision to defect from the Democrats was the Party’s stance on Israel. As a proud Jewish woman, she was particularly disturbed by the Democratic Party's reluctance to show clear-cut support for Israel.
She also expressed her disappointment with the party's acceptance of progressive voices condoning or justifying terrorist activities.
“As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism,” said Cassel in a declarative statement.
Valdés Unwilling to Be Ignored in Caucus
Cassel’s switch from Democrat to Republican paralleled another change, that of Susan Valdés. After failing in her attempt to secure a party leadership role, Valdés decided it was time for a change.
She did not wish to spend her last two years in the state Legislature feeling invisible in a caucus with leaders neglecting her community's needs.
Valdés spoke of how she could not sustain her role in a caucus whose leaders seemed ignorant of her community's problems.
Republican Dominance in Florida Legislature Bolstered
The switches by Cassel and Valdés only strengthened the already powerful supermajority of Republicans in the Florida Legislature.
President-elect Trump, while appreciating the recent switches, expressed a clear wish for more "disillusioned" Democrats to join the GOP. His intent was seemingly to create a greater political alignment that could help in achieving the goals he had set for his tenure.
Trump publicly stated in a show of approval, “Congratulations to Hillary Cassel for becoming the second State Representative from the Great State of Florida to switch her Party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, once more expanding the GOP Supermajority in the State House!”
Call for Other Democrats to Join GOP
Trump not only congratulated the new GOP member but went one step further by issuing a wide invitation to all "disillusioned Democrats" to switch parties.
He gestured towards the idea of contributing to a noble quest that could potentially rebuild the nation and make it greater than ever.
"I would further like to invite other disillusioned Democrats to switch Parties and join us on this noble quest to save our country and, make America great again – greater than ever before. Thank you, Hillary!" Trump said.
A Change Reflecting Core Values
Throughout their transition, both Cassel and Valdés have stayed steadfast in their reasoning for such a surprising political shift.
Each cited the evolving nature of their own values as a prime factor in their decision to defect from the Democrats and join the Republican Party. "I can no longer remain in a party that doesn’t represent my values," stated Cassel.
