Former CA State Sen. Gloria Romero Switches Affiliation to Republican Party

 September 10, 2024

In a bold political shift, former California State Sen. Gloria Romero has left the Democratic Party to join the Republicans, expressing dissatisfaction with the party she long supported.

Romero, long a significant figure in California politics, announced her departure from the Democratic Party and explained the reasons behind her new affiliation with the Republican Party amid Kamala Harris' campaign for the White House, as Breitbart reports.

Having previously served as the Senate Majority Leader in California, Romero revealed her decision to leave the Democrats this Wednesday.

She expressed her discontent with the current state of the party, stating it no longer represented the ideals she once championed.

During her announcement, Romero declared that she was joining a "growing number" of individuals who have recently left the Democratic Party.

She explained that her decision was influenced by a desire to align with a party that, under Donald Trump's leadership, she believes now champions working people.

Romero’s Bold Move at Sunrise

Romero’s transition was symbolically marked by changing her voter registration at sunrise. "I changed my voting registration today as the sun was rising, to Republican, which has, under Donald Trump, become the champion of working people," she stated in her announcement.

The following day, Romero appeared on Fox News in an interview with Laura Ingraham, where she took the opportunity to criticize Harris's track record on education during her tenure as California's attorney general. Romero accused Harris of failing to implement necessary changes in the educational system.

Sharp Critique of Harris’s Education Policies

Romero criticized Harris for her alignment with teachers' unions, which she argued blocked essential education reforms.

"Her record as attorney general showed that she did nothing to change the schools, to provide for school choice," Romero commented. She further highlighted the poor educational outcomes in Harris's hometown of Oakland, where a significant majority of African American and Latino children are not proficient in math or reading.

Romero's criticisms extended to specific policies championed by Harris, including a controversial attempt to pass legislation that would jail mothers of truant students. She described these actions as indicative of Harris's prioritization of union interests over students' needs.

Rising Discontent Among California Democrats

Romero is not alone in her departure from the Democratic Party; she follows California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil, who also left the party earlier in August.

Alvarado-Gil cited similar reasons for her exit, indicating a broader sense of dissatisfaction among long-standing party members.

The defections of high-profile politicians like Romero and Alvarado-Gil reflect a potentially shifting political landscape in California. Romero's move, particularly, underscores a growing disillusionment with the Democratic Party's direction among some of its once staunch supporters.

The Implications of Romero's Party Switch

Romero believes her party switch reflects broader sentiments among Californians. "Blue California may be blue, but people are ready to vote for change, to make America great again, and I take pride in saying that today," she articulated during her announcement.

This move has sparked a variety of reactions across the political spectrum, with some viewing it as a sign of increasing polarization, while others see it as a realignment towards parties that they feel better represent their interests and values.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Party Politics in California

The departure of Romero and others from the Democratic Party may signal a reevaluation of political alignments within the state.

As the political climate continues to evolve, the actions of individuals like Romero could have significant implications for the future political landscape of California.
