Former Clinton aide expresses doubt about Harris' military resolve amid Trump's Iran strikes

 June 24, 2025

Jamie Metzl, a former member of the Clinton administration and a prominent Democrat, has publicly commended President Donald Trump for his fortitude in ordering military action against Iran's nuclear sites.

Although he supported Kamala Harris, Metzl expressed skepticism about her capability to take such decisive military steps, as the Washington Examiner reports.

Metzl's comments came over the weekend, as he applauded Trump for the airstrikes directed at key Iranian nuclear facilities. These facilities included Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz, all critical as they are reportedly part of Iran’s development towards a nuclear weapon.

National security background highlighted

Metzl brings a substantial background in national security, having served on the National Security Council during Bill Clinton's presidency. Adding to his credentials, Metzl was the deputy staff director for then-Sen. Joe Biden on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

His endorsement of Trump's actions marked a departure from his usual stance. He has been a vocal critic of Trump in the past, emphasizing his willingness to set aside partisan differences for national interest.

In a Sunday post on the social media site X, Metzl shared his approval of the airstrikes. He cited what he perceives as a threat posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions toward the United States and its allies as reasons for supporting the bold action.

Questioning Harris' resolve

Beyond praising Trump, Metzl expressed doubts about former Vice President and failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris's ability to execute such military decisions. Despite having voted for Harris in the 2024 election, Metzl questioned her capacity to make similarly decisive moves against Iran, which he deemed essential.

Metzl conveyed his reservations, suggesting that Harris might lack the necessary courage or determination in such critical matters of national security.

He articulated his belief that while electing Harris would benefit democracy and society, when it came to crucial military decisions, her resolve could be lacking.

Global tensions persist

Metzl pointed out the long-standing tensions between the United States and Iran. He highlighted that Iran has maintained an adversarial position towards the United States for over four decades.

He underscored the severity of the situation, citing that the Iranian regime’s actions have resulted in the deaths of numerous American citizens. He emphasized the regime's ideological stance, portraying it as far from being superficial rhetoric.

According to Metzl, the threat from Iran extended beyond mere messaging, embodying a potential nuclear threat to both America and the broader Middle East region.

Complex decisions underscore risks

In discussing the necessity of military actions, Metzl acknowledged the inherent risks involved. He pointed out the challenges faced by decision-makers in these scenarios, where the stakes are high and outcomes uncertain.

While affirming the potential perils of military strikes, Metzl stressed the importance of bold leadership when addressing threats of nuclear proliferation. For him, such leadership was exemplified in Trump’s recent decision.

Although Metzl's statements were unusual coming from a staunch Democrat, they serve to underscore the complexities of global security issues. His comments highlight the weighing of national security concerns against partisan loyalties.
