Kari Dziedzic, former Minnesota Senate Majority Leader, passed away on Friday at the age of 62 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

Dziedzic, who served for 12 years in the state legislature, was widely recognized for her legislative accomplishments, bipartisan approach, and courage during her terminal illness, as CBS News reports.

Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in early 2023, Dziedzic continued her duties in the Senate until February 2024 when she stepped down after learning that her cancer had returned. Despite her illness, she led the Minnesota Senate through a critical legislative session in 2023, earning praise for her ability to work across the aisle.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Dziedzic attended the University of Minnesota before beginning her career in public service. Over her 12 years in the legislature, she was known for her collaborative style and for achieving significant legislative victories, even while facing personal health challenges.

During her time as Senate Majority Leader, she worked with both Democrats and Republicans to pass key legislation, including funding for infrastructure projects and policies aimed at expanding healthcare benefits. Her most recent initiative, a law requiring insurance coverage for wigs for cancer patients, is set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.

One of Dziedzic's most notable achievements was leading the passage of several important DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) priorities in 2023. These included laws protecting abortion rights, providing free school meals for students, and expanding voting rights for felons. Her leadership in these efforts earned her widespread respect across party lines.

"Her legacy includes significant achievements in policy and investment in Minnesota, but more importantly, she will be remembered for treating people with dignity and respect," said House Speaker Melissa Hortman, who worked closely with Dziedzic in 2023.

A Legacy of Compassion and Leadership

Gov. Tim Walz also paid tribute to Dziedzic, calling her a “one-of-a-kind leader” who brought people together. “No one worked harder or got more done in one session as Majority Leader than Kari did,” Walz said. “She was a talented legislator with old-school political savvy and a knack for relationship building.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar reflected on Dziedzic’s ability to unite people across party lines. "She governed with strength, calm, and grace," Klobuchar said. "She was able to get big things done without political drama, earning her the respect of her colleagues on both sides of the aisle."

Despite her personal battle with cancer, Dziedzic remained dedicated to serving Minnesotans. Her family described her as a leader with “a heart of gold” who was always willing to help others.

“Kari will be remembered by her family and those she served for her enthusiastic and humble leadership,” the family said in a statement. “She inspired all who knew her.”

Political Leaders Express Condolences

Minnesota DFL Chair Ken Martin praised Dziedzic’s enduring impact on the state, saying her leadership "will outlast us all" and noting, "Minnesota has lost a giant, but her extraordinary legacy will continue to influence the state for years to come," he said.

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, a Republican, also honored Dziedzic’s contributions, calling her a passionate legislator and a respected leader. “She will be remembered for her integrity and her compassion for Minnesotans, something that we all saw as she continued to serve even as she battled cancer,” Johnson said.

A Personal and Political Hero

Dziedzic is survived by her mother, five siblings, their spouses, and several nieces and nephews. Her family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Dziedzic’s visitation will be held Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Kozlak-Radulovich Chapel in Minneapolis.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to causes close to Dziedzic’s heart, including the Dziedzic Family Foundation, East Side Neighborhood Services, the Walt Dziedzic Innovation Fund at the Minneapolis Park Board, and the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance.

Throughout her career, Dziedzic’s leadership was driven by a deep commitment to public service. She was particularly focused on improving the lives of others, especially those facing health challenges like herself. Her legacy as a dedicated public servant and compassionate leader will continue to shape Minnesota politics for many years to come.

Klobuchar summed up Dziedzic’s impact, saying, "Kari Dziedzic was an incredible public servant who gave so much to our state. She will be deeply missed, but her contributions will live on for generations."
