Former UNC Star Joe Wolf, NBA Player And Coach, Passes Away At 59

 September 28, 2024

Joe Wolf, a former North Carolina basketball star and NBA veteran, has died at the age of 59, according to an announcement made by the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this week. His death marks the passing of a player and coach who made significant contributions to basketball at both the collegiate and professional levels.

Wolf’s impact as both a player and coach was felt across the NBA, the G League, and in college basketball, Fox News reported.

A standout player from an early age, Wolf's basketball journey began in his hometown of Kohler, Wisconsin. He led Kohler High School to three state championships and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel named him Wisconsin's greatest high school basketball player in 2005. His talent and leadership were evident even then, as he went on to become a McDonald's All-American in 1983.

Wolf Played Under Dean Smith At North Carolina

After his high school success, Wolf played for the University of North Carolina, where he played under the legendary coach Dean Smith. As co-captain of the Tar Heels during the 1986-87 season, Wolf was a key part of the team’s success, alongside basketball icons Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.

During his four years at North Carolina, Wolf contributed to a remarkable 115-22 record for the team. The Tar Heels advanced to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight twice during his tenure. In 1987, the team recognized him for his contributions, earning him All-ACC honors. He closed out his college career with 1,231 points.

Selected In The 1987 NBA Draft By The Clippers

Wolf’s college success led to his selection in the 1987 NBA draft as the No. 13 overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers. He would go on to enjoy an 11-year NBA career, playing for multiple teams, including the Denver Nuggets and five other franchises.

Known for his versatility and work ethic, Wolf's professional career was a testament to his ability to adapt and contribute across different teams. While not a superstar, he earned respect for his reliable play and strong basketball IQ.

Transition To Coaching After NBA Career

After retiring from playing, Wolf turned to coaching, continuing to influence the game from the sidelines. He began his coaching career as an assistant at the college level, with positions at William & Mary and UNC Wilmington.

Wolf also spent time coaching in the NBA’s G League, where he worked with teams such as Idaho, Colorado, and Greensboro. Most recently, in 2023, he served as an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Milwaukee Bucks Pay Tribute To Wolf’s Legacy

In their announcement of Wolf’s passing, the Milwaukee Bucks emphasized the lasting impact he had on their organization and the basketball world. “Throughout his life, Joe touched many lives and was a highly respected, adored, and dedicated coach and player across the NBA,” the team said in a statement.

The Bucks highlighted Wolf's role not just as a coach but as a beloved figure off the court as well. “Off the court, Joe was a beloved brother, uncle, friend, and community leader. We send our deepest condolences to Joe’s family and friends. The Bucks and Herd will always be grateful to Joe for his hard work and commitment to our organization. He will be missed,” the team added.

Wolf Reflects On Influence Of Dean Smith

Wolf often credited his time under Dean Smith at North Carolina as pivotal in shaping his approach to both playing and coaching. In a 2018 interview with the *Greensboro News and Record*, he explained how Smith’s emphasis on building proper habits helped him throughout his career. "I like to think I started getting trained the minute I stepped on campus. Coach Smith was all about building the proper habits. That benefits me today."

A Legacy Spanning High School, College, NBA, And G League

Wolf's influence spanned every level of basketball, from his high school dominance to his collegiate success and professional playing career. In each stage of his life, he left a mark on the basketball community, earning admiration and respect along the way.

His time coaching in the G League further solidified his reputation as a mentor to younger players, many of whom looked up to him for guidance and leadership. Those who had the privilege of working with Wolf will miss his presence on the sidelines and his dedication to developing talent.

Condolences Pour In For A Respected Figure

As news of Wolf’s passing spread, tributes poured in from across the basketball world. Former teammates, players he coached, and colleagues expressed their sorrow over the loss of a man known for his humility and dedication to the game.

Wolf’s passing leaves a void in the basketball community, particularly for those who saw him not just as a player or coach but as a mentor and friend. People will continue to remember his contributions to basketball, both on and off the court, for years to come.
