GOP lawmakers propose coins to commemorate Charlie Kirk
In a poignant gesture of remembrance, two Republican congressmen have unveiled a plan to honor Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk with a special series of silver dollar coins featuring his likeness as Breitbart reports.
This legislative effort, led by Reps. August Pfluger of Texas and Abe Hamadeh of Arizona seek to memorialize Kirk after his tragic assassination on Sept. 10 during an event at Utah Valley University.
The incident shocked many, occurring just as Kirk engaged with students in a question-and-answer session on campus.
A heartfelt response to shocking loss
Kirk, a well-known conservative activist, lost his life in the attack, sparking widespread mourning across political divides.
In the days following, the Senate took a unified stand, passing a resolution without opposition to denounce the violence and celebrate Kirk’s influence.
That resolution underscored his role in shaping young minds through his leadership at Turning Point USA, a prominent conservative organization.
Proposing rare honor via currency
Building on this sentiment, Reps. Pfluger and Hamadeh have pledged to “introduce a bill later this week” for a unique tribute.
Their proposal, named the Charlie Kirk Commemorative Coin Act, calls for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to oversee the creation of 400,000 silver one-dollar coins.
One side of each coin would display Kirk’s image, while the opposite side would bear the heartfelt message, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Coin design intended to symbolize national values
Further details on the coins include engravings of Kirk’s full name, Charles James Kirk, alongside the year 2026, the official name of the United States, and the national motto.
Treasury Secretary Bessent would finalize the design, working closely with President Donald Trump to ensure it reflects the gravity of the honor.
This tribute aligns with a long-standing U.S. custom, as the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco notes that only individuals who have passed away may appear on American currency or coins.
Lawmakers reflect on Kirk's legacy
Rep. Hamadeh expressed deep admiration for Kirk, highlighting how he “tirelessly sacrificed his time, energy, and money to save” the country “for future generations.”
He stressed the importance of ensuring that Kirk’s “life must be commemorated” with a lasting symbol like these coins.
Echoing this, Rep. Pfluger praised Kirk as a “conservative titan whose transformational impact on millions of Americans deserves permanent recognition alongside our nation’s greatest leaders and influential figures.”
