Harris Faces Criticism from Key Democratic Party Donor Over Campaign Spending

 November 28, 2024

Democratic donor John Morgan has called for Vice President Kamala Harris to be permanently banned from running for national office, criticizing her handling of campaign finances during her presidential bid.

Amid allegations of excessive spending and mismanagement, Morgan suggested that Harris's actions during her presidential campaign against Donald Trump should disqualify her from future races, as the Daily Mail reports.

Morgan, a notable longtime Democratic Party donor, voiced his concerns on Chris Cuomo's CUOMO on NewsNation, where he lambasted Harris for the extravagant financial practices of her campaign.

Morgan pointed out specific instances of what he considered wasteful spending, including a striking $900,000 to illuminate the Las Vegas Sphere with Harris's image.

This spending spree included massive ad buys across various states, including Florida, which were part of a broader strategy to thwart Donald Trump's reelection efforts.

Financial Missteps Highlighted

Morgan also accused several of Harris's consultants of having ulterior financial motives, profiting from large expenditures on advertising.

"All of a sudden, everybody's got the keys to the candy store, ad buyers, talent consultants. There's 100 days to do it, and the money started pouring in, pouring in," Morgan remarked during the interview.

He was particularly incensed about the aforementioned payment to feature Harris's campaign on the Las Vegas Sphere, emphasizing the excessive nature of the expenditure.

"Nine hundred thousand to put her face on the sphere in Las Vegas! The ego, the crazy, the commissions," Morgan complained.

Expenditures Under Scrutiny

Total spending by Harris's campaign reportedly reached $1.4 billion, with specific lavish expenditures highlighted, including up to $4 million on private jets and at least $1 million to Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Studios.

Other notable expenses cited by Morgan included $5,000 on a California nail artist and a staggering $654 million on advertising alone, painting a picture of a campaign with few financial constraints.

Harris's campaign approach involved extensive travel to swing states, leveraging celebrity endorsements, and hosting large rallies, all contributing to the substantial financial outlay.

Post-Campaign Challenges and Political Future

Following the campaign, Harris's team faced a significant debt of $20 million and is still continuing fundraising efforts to manage this financial burden.

Additionally, some staff members from the Democratic National Committee were laid off without severance, adding to the post-campaign controversies.

Harris took a brief respite, vacationing with her family in Hawaii, before returning to the political arena.

Despite Controversies, Harris Eyes Future Political Roles

Entering the race after Joe Biden's withdrawal post a debate, Harris maintained Biden's campaign infrastructure in Delaware while integrating her own team of advisors.

Despite the challenges faced during and after her presidential campaign, Harris remains a prominent figure in Democratic politics, currently leading in polls for the 2028 presidential race.

Advisors and allies have been instructed to "keep her options open," signaling possible aspirations for the governorship of California in 2026, according to Politico.
